The Details

Dot Cakes started in New York state when Alex Posner created the first Dot Cake for her friend as a college gift in 2017. From there, others asked to buy versions of the cake from her for other celebrations like birthdays and anniversaries. As she started to gain more business, Alex created an Instagram for her desserts called “Okay But First Cake.” When she went off to college, her mother, Sondra Posner, continued making and selling cakes. Three years later, they opened a store in Westbury, New York, called The Dot Cakes by OBFC. After graduating, Alex returned to the business, and the two have continued to grow, opening a store in Rosbury, New York, and partnering with Butterfield Market in New York City in the fall of 2025.

In Spring 2026, the business became known across the country when the Dotcups went viral online. Dotcups are a miniature version of the 9” and 12” Dot Cakes, with layered cake and vanilla frosting covered in a thick layer of dot sprinkles. All over social media platforms, like TikTok and Instagram, influencers have gone out to buy and taste test the cakes. Others who are not in the area have attempted to recreate the cakes back home instead. And for many small businesses, including multiple in New Jersey, they have taken the original Dotcups and recreated them as their own version.
Over the last few weeks, the Dot Cake has spread from New York to New Jersey and gone beyond its original form. From cakes to lattes to ice cream, the viral Dotcups can be seen all throughout New Jersey.
