About Kumon

Kumon is not traditional tutoring: it is a self-learning program designed to help students build long-term academic skills. Students begin at their own starting point and follow an individualized learning plan that allows them to progress at their own pace. Through daily practice worksheets, students gradually master each concept before moving ahead, helping them build a strong foundation in both math and reading.

With support and guidance from trained Kumon Instructors, students learn how to work through challenges independently, develop better study habits, and gain confidence in their abilities. Students aren’t playing catch-up or working on short-term goals. They are reinforcing the core skills that are critical to academic success and being an independent learner.

Kumon is backed by over 65 years of experience, and the program has helped millions of students worldwide develop the skills they need to succeed. The program serves students across all ages and ability levels, making it a fit for families looking to strengthen foundational skills, support academic growth, or help their child feel more confident in school.

Kumon instructors work with each student to create a plan unique to them. The subject, the pacing of the work, and the goals are dictated by the student. While Kumon is a traditional, paper-and-pencil form of instruction, students can also complete their work on a tablet through the Kumon Connect application.

Students are eligible to enroll as early as age 3 to work on basics like pencil-holding, pre-reading, number-sequencing, and other pre-kindergarten skills. Elementary, middle, and high school-aged students can get support in math or reading. There are also several Kumon Centers throughout Northern Virginia, including Alexandria, Annandale, Burke, Centreville, Chantilly, Fair Oaks, Fairfax, Falls Church, Herndon, McLean, Merrifield, Reston, Springfield, and Vienna.

How Kumon Helps Fight the Summer Slide

We can all appreciate that kids need time to play and relax over summer break. But without regular academic practice, students can lose some of the progress they made during the school year. Educators call this the summer slide, and it can make the back-to-school transition more difficult once fall rolls around.

Students can stay engaged during the summer in a way that feels consistent and manageable. The program’s daily worksheets are designed to build skills gradually, so students can continue practicing math and reading without feeling overwhelmed.

Because each student works at their own pace, summer becomes a great time to strengthen areas that need extra support or move ahead in subjects where they’re ready for more. Students master one concept before moving on to the next, which helps build both skill and confidence over time. Kumon’s digital platform, Kumon Connect, gives families more flexibility, allowing students to complete worksheets from anywhere in the world.

The self-learning approach also helps kids develop independence – a major win for parents who want their children to feel more prepared, motivated, and capable heading into the next school year.

For families looking to keep learning on track this summer, Kumon provides structure without taking over the season. Students can continue building strong academic habits while still enjoying everything summer has to offer.

The initial assessment for prospective Kumon students is always free, but families who enroll by June 30 will get up to $80 off. (At participating locations. See center for details).
