Kook Dogg Cafe is more than just a sandwich shop. Located at Reston Station at 1888 Explorer Street, the family-owned restaurant has been serving pizzas, sandwiches, salads, seasonal specials, and more since opening in July 2024. Chef and co-owner Paul Kuchler runs the restaurant alongside his wife, Noel, bringing decades of restaurant experience and family influences to the menu. The Story Behind Kook Dogg Cafe
Paul Kuchler, chef and co-owner of Kook Dogg Cafe, comes from a family with deep roots in the restaurant industry. His father immigrated from Germany and spent seven years working in restaurants in Paris before moving to Northern Virginia. In the mid-1980s, he co-opened Le Canard, a French restaurant in Vienna that remained open for 35 years.
As a result, Paul spent much of his childhood in restaurants. At 12 years old, he started working as a dishwasher before eventually taking on nearly every position in the restaurant. The experience taught him different aspects of the business, and he ultimately worked his way up to head chef without attending culinary school.

With mentorship in his family’s kitchen, Paul continued developing his culinary skills. Paul later gained additional experience managing restaurants and working in front-of-house operations. While those roles helped broaden his experience in the industry, Noel said, “He still had his story to tell.” Eventually, Paul decided to create a restaurant that reflected his personality and cooking style, leading to the opening of Kook Dogg Cafe.
The restaurant’s name comes from Paul’s childhood nickname. While brainstorming names for the business, he revisited the nickname “Kook Dogg” and decided it was a fitting representation of his story and personality.
A Menu Inspired by Family, Heritage + Creativity
Paul’s background is reflected throughout the Kook Dogg Cafe menu. While the restaurant serves familiar dishes like pizza, sandwiches, salads, and soups, the menu also draws inspiration from Paul and Noel’s family backgrounds and experiences.
The flavors are influenced by Paul’s German and Irish heritage and Noel’s Lebanese background. Instead of focusing on one particular cuisine, the restaurant incorporates different influences throughout its menu.
That creativity can also be found in Kook Dogg Cafe’s weekly specials. Paul develops recipes inspired by his travels, seasonal ingredients, and conversations with friends and staff members. One employee from El Salvador, for example, inspired a pupusa special. The restaurant also hosts an annual Oktoberfest celebration inspired by Paul’s German heritage. Paul said he enjoys venturing “outside the box” and developing new dishes.
Some of Noel’s favorite menu items include the Sunset Hill Salad, Walter’s Revenge, Reston Club, and the cheesesteak-inspired South Philly Pizza. She also recommends checking the rotating specials menu. “You can never go wrong with anything on the special menu,” Noel said.
On weekends, the cafe expands its menu with brunch dishes, including chicken and waffles. Kook Dogg also serves seasonal cocktails and mocktails developed by Noel and the team. During The Fairfax Girl’s visit, we tried the Mango Tango and Summer in Florence, two seasonal drinks that complemented the restaurant’s creative menu.
More Than a Neighborhood Restaurant
Beyond the menu, Kook Dogg Cafe was designed to feel like a neighborhood gathering place. The restaurant has a bright, modern interior with music and a relaxed atmosphere. “It’s a kind of place you just come to feel relaxed, where you don’t feel the hustle and bustle of the area,” Noel said.
The restaurant accommodates both quick carryout orders and longer meals. Kook Dogg Cafe has a dedicated carryout section as well as grab-and-go desserts, beer, and wine to-go. Its location near several office buildings also makes it a convenient lunch and dinner destination for those working in the Reston Station area.

Kook Dogg Cafe also hosts office happy hours, family reunions, private parties, and other gatherings. “We’ve done a lot of happy hour parties [and] office work events,” Noel said.
Kook Dogg Cafe is located at 1888 Explorer Street in Reston. The restaurant is open Sunday through Thursday from 11AM to 9PM and Friday and Saturday from 11AM to 10PM. Weekend brunch is served from 11AM to 3PM.
Happy hour runs Monday through Friday from 4PM to 6PM and Saturday and Sunday from 3PM to 5PM.
