Fall season is the perfect time for festivity, and October has already kicked off to a great start. From thrilling haunted houses to fall farm activities, Bergen County is full of events celebrating the spooky spirits in the air. American Dream Halloween Day | 1 American Dream Way, Court A, Level 1, East Rutherford

Friday, October 31st | 2PM – 5PM

American Dream will be hosting a Halloween fun-fest on the day itself, with plenty of family-friendly options to complement the mall experience. Among the attractions include:

  • Halloween Trivia from 2PM – 3PM
  • Halloween Parade from 3PM – 4PM
  • Costume Contest from 4PM – 5PM

Visitors are encouraged to bring festive outfits and gear up for frightful activities. This event does not require a ticket, and parking can be found in American Dream’s parking garage.

Brighton Asylum | Demarest Farms, 244 Werimus Road, Hillsdale

This enormous walk-through dark attraction features scary live actors, jump scares, and in-your-face special effects to create a terrifying haunted house experience. This exhibit features three primary attractions: Brighton Asylum, the main event that follows the story of exploring the 73-year-old abandoned asylum; Subculture, which is about avoiding dangerous creatures in the asylum; and The Bleeding Grounds, where visitors explore the disturbing past of the asylum’s staff quarters.

Oradell Animal Hospital

Community Costume Closet | Ridgewood Public Library Lobby, Ridgewood

Every day until Saturday, October 25th | 9AM – 5PM

The Ridgewood Public Library is hosting a community costume closet in its lobby for anybody interested in donating, picking up, or viewing costumes. The library team encourages dropping off gently used, clean costumes for community display and recollection. Costumes for all ages are accepted, and visitors are not required to donate a costume in order to take one.

Escape Room NJ | 157A Main Street, Hackensack

Every Day | 10AM – 1AM

This escape room is open regularly with fun, spooky activities for the season. The Hackensack location features one prominent escape room, named “The Other Side.” It has two versions — a “Scary Version” and “Detective Version” — which are about escaping or investigating a haunted hotel room, respectively. There are options for non-private and private games, and the escape room lasts for an hour.

Escape Room NJ also features team building activities, which range from one to four hours and involve activities such as paintball, airsoft and virtual reality arcades. The venue also has a dining menu and is open to hosting parties upon booking, making it a perfect fit for a Halloween celebration.

Halloween Light Show | Demarest Farms, 244 Werimus Road, Hillsdale

Thursday, October 9th to Monday, October 13th | 6:30PM – 8PM
Thursday, October 16th to Friday, October 31st | 6:30PM – 8PM

This family-friendly vehicle-guided light show is one of the biggest in Bergen County. Visitors can drive through 32 acres of Halloween light displays with a guided radio tour, enjoying homemade treats from the farm’s market as well. This tour requires a vehicle and a reservation, which can be booked here. The Demarest Farms staff warns that there are no options to purchase a ticket at the site itself, and they may not be able to accommodate oversized vehicles.

Howl-O-Ween Hero Breakfast | Marcus Live! Bar + Grille, East Rutherford

Sunday, October 26th | 9:45AM – 11AM

This family-friendly Halloween breakfast buffet will be hosted at American Dream and will feature Chase and Marshall, two popular pups from Nickelodeon’s children’s show Paw Patrol. Ticketed visitors will receive special gifts, including a free mimosa for each adult and surprise gift for each child. Lap-sitting children under the age of two are also admitted free of charge. Tickets are required for participation and can be purchased here.

Pantophobia Haunted Attraction | Darlington Lake, Mahwah

Fridays and Saturdays until Saturday, November 1st | 7:30PM – 11PM
Sundays in October | 7:30PM – 10PM

Pantophobia’s Haunted Attraction is considered one of New Jersey’s best haunted trails and will be featuring the spooky tale The Legend of Cyrus Grain this year. The story follows the titular Cyrus doing anything he can to keep trespassers off his family’s land, and visitors will embark on a search for Cyrus as part of the attraction. There are two options for the experience — one is a 20-to-25-minute hay ride that is best for families and children, and the other is a 30-35-minute walking trail around and through Darlington Lake and its wooded area. Both options are entirely outdoors, and those visiting the walking trail are recommended to wear athletic footwear.

Reservations are required, and refunds are not accepted. The attraction also accepts payment at the site, but only via cash. Tickets can be purchased here.

Ridgewood Halloween House | 294 West End Avenue, Ridgewood

Fridays in October | 6:30PM – 9:30PM
Saturdays in October | 5:30PM – 9:30PM

This free haunted house exhibit is open on Fridays and Saturdays with a full outdoor exhibition, including a zombie cemetery walkthrough. It is a no-contact haunted house and is family-friendly, so it is a great choice for a family outing. On Saturdays, sensory-friendly hours are held between 5:30PM and 6:30PM where there are no motion, sound, or strobe lights to accommodate high-sensitivity visitors. On October 18th, this will occur from 4:30PM to 5:30PM instead.

No payment or tickets are needed to visit this attraction.

Secor Farms | 85 Airmont Avenue, Mahwah

Every Day until Saturday, November 1st | 9AM – 5:30PM

Mahwah’s Secor Farms is hosting seasonal activities for the rest of October, including hay rides, pumpkin patch visiting, and a corn maze. The farm is fit for the season with Halloween decorations, gourds, and pumpkins, some of which are available for purchase. With its simple, fun vibe and focus on all types of fall-related fun, it is a great low-intensity alternative to still enjoy Halloween festivities. Secor Farms requires online reservations for any weekend activities, and the directory to all booking options can be found here.

Skylands Stadium Jack-O-Lantern Experience | Skylands Stadium, 94 Championship Place, Augusta

Thursdays through Sundays until Sunday, November 2nd | 6PM
Monday, October 27th to Wednesday, October 29th | 6PM

This event will feature a transformative visual walk-through experience with over 6,000 jack-o-lanterns transforming Skylands Stadium. The stroll is 45 minutes and accompanied by seasonal food, drinks, and snacks, including s’mores, apple cider, hot chocolate, and ice cream. There will also be an interactive corn maze and thrill rides for kids, starting on October 16th. Adults can also indulge in the stadium’s Professional Tire + Auto Beer Garden, which also features live music performances on Fridays and Saturdays.

Tickets to the experience must be purchased in advance online, which can be done here. Parking is free, and children who are three feet tall or under receive free admission. V.I.P. tickets are also available for those looking to skip the long lines, and they come with a complimentary drink token as well.
