Sudden Closure

On April 16th, Coach House customers were greeted with a sign at the door that read: “Dear valued customers, this is a notice of permanent closure!! Thank you for your loyalty and support. MSN reported that Coach House employees were told the space had been sold, leaving about 30 workers without jobs and with little warning. That afternoon, staff gathered together for a final photo in front of the diner’s sign, with some employees in tears.

One Google reviewer wrote: “It’s so sad to hear that this diner we’ve known for 40 years has permanently closed. So many memories were made there, sharing great meals with friends, laughing, and spending hours just sitting and chatting. It was more than just a place to eat, it felt like a second home. We even had our favorite waiter, Rahman…such a kind and funny guy who always made our visits extra special. He was part of what made that place unforgettable.”

A Hackensack Staple

The Coach House has been a dining staple in Hackensack since 1982, serving the community classic breakfast and lunch favorites for four decades. The diner was founded by Greek immigrants Clem Pappas and his wife Helen and remained a family-run business throughout its history, later owned + operated by George and Vivien Pappas.

Popular menu items included the French toast, egg white omelet, and French onion soup, along with burgers, sandwiches, milkshakes, and cheesecake.

In response to the sudden closure, one user commented on Facebook: “I’m going to miss that diner. I went there after my prom and Paramus. It’s a shame…I hope someone can buy it and leave it open again. I love the Coach House diner.”

Another user shared: “Damn. Best cheesecakes.”

The closure also marks the loss of one of Hackensack’s two remaining 24-hour diners, leaving Chit Chat Diner on 515 Essex Street as the town’s only remaining option for round-the-clock bites.

We have reached out to the Coach House team and will update this piece as more details behind the closing become available.
