Meet Nightshade Coffee: A Gothic-Themed Cafe in Westwood

Black Friday 2025 was a fitting opening day for the long-awaited Nightshade Coffee in Westwood. The gothic-themed coffee shop, located at 459 Broadway, drew thousands of neighbors on its opening day. The Bergen County Girl chatted with owners Katie and Hunter about their vision for the shop and what visitors can expect. Read on for more about Nightshade Coffee in Westwood.

About Nightshade Coffee

Katie, a self-proclaimed “coffee snob,” started her passion for making coffee at home and has a background in fashion as well as being a hair stylist. She and Hunter are both foodies and bring to the shop a ton of creativity with the menu, basing it around the things they both personally enjoy and “like to serve what they like to eat and drink.” They both have the same favorite food item on the menu – The Slavic Shadow – which happened to be Casey from Team BG’s as well. This is a “Sand Witch” with farmer’s cheese, radish, and scallion on an herbed focaccia inspired by Hunter’s family recipe, a unique spin on the traditional Polish Twarozek sandwich. All of the ingredients are locally sourced.

The innovation doesn’t stop at the food – so many of the drink items were standouts as well, including the Siouxsie, a latte with spicy cayenne syrup, sweet cold foam, and cayenne powder. The name for this drink was inspired by the band Siouxsie and the Banshees, and many of the menu items were named after various Goth culture icons. In addition to coffee drinks, they also serve tea, lemonade, and matcha options, as well as a variety of housemade syrups that can be incorporated into a custom drink.

Katie said they created this space to serve the unique and delicious drinks and food locals have come to enjoy, and to provide a third space for the Gothic community outside of a club or bar. They are planning on hosting future events in the space, likely starting this summer.

What to Expect

The whole vibe of the shop is dark and moody, with the walls covered in various antiques, including a mourning wreath and taxidermy, all sourced from Katie’s personal collection. A curio cabinet stands out in the corner, showcasing trinkets galore, including authentic lightbulbs dated back to WWII. She hopes that the space will eventually become somewhere they can sell antiques as well. There is currently a curated retail section that features products from various local small artisans, like candles, oils, t-shirts, stickers, and small prints.

Nightshade Coffee is located at 459 Broadway, Westwood, and open Wednesday-Monday from 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM (closed Tuesdays).
