New Jersey Museums + Libraries That Host After-Hours Events

The meaning of ‘a night on the town’ has changed. The 21+ scene has transformed over the years from massive clubs with long lines, to intimate lounges, rooftops, early nights, and day raves. Currently, alternative spaces, including museums and libraries, are offering creative programming — pairing something fun with a cultural and historical experience. Check out this curated list of events from The Local Girl in the Greater New Jersey area.

Liberty Science Center frequently holds its LSC After Dark events, which in the past have been themed such as The Beatles or Taylor Swift. These events include food, a bar, dancing, a DJ, laser shows, and more. And the exhibits are still open. You can also select your arrival time and purchase tickets directly on the website.

The Jersey City Library is transformed on all four floors with four unique rooms of DJs repping Y2K, Latin, Hip Hop, and Rave. It is from 7PM to 11PM, and tickets for General Admission are $25.

Ballroom Dance; Paint + Sip | May 7 – June 25; May 9, June 13, July 11, August 8 + | Passaic County Arts Center, Hawthorne

The Passaic County Arts Center at the John W. Rea House is a charming venue dating back to 1810 and is listed on the State and National Registers of Historic Places. Ballroom dance events are free, but make sure to register online. Paint + Sip is $10 with limited spots available. Both events are 6PM to 8PM.

The Sounds of Japan: A Cultural Journey with Masayo Ishigure is for one night only. This event is sponsored by The Friends of the Englewood Library and free to attend, but you must register in advance. Ishiguire played on a Grammy-Award winning soundtrack, and all performers will be in traditional Japanese costumes. Event is from 7PM to 8PM.

The museum hosts live music from up-and-coming artists that fills the venue and attendees are served a complimentary glass of wine or soft drink, while viewing the beautiful galleries and their pieces. Tickets are $10 for members, $25 for non-members, 6:30PM to 9:30PM. Register directly on their website. Cool fact: the Morris Museum is an affiliate of The Smithsonian.

First Thursdays | first Thursday of each month | Montclair Museum of Art, Montclair

First Thursdays at the museum are free, but registration is required in advance, and held the first Thursday of each month from 5PM to 9PM. The event offers activities, food trucks, cash bar, talks, tours, and live performances. The Cornerstone Café also offers beverages and snacks.

Ghosts + Legends Downtown Tour | Thursdays + Fridays | The Paranormal Museum, Asbury Park

This ghost tour explores Asbury Park’s “haunted downtown”, and the Tour Guides will tell chilling stories as you visit legendary landmarks. Event is rain or shine. Tours are all outdoors and on Fridays + Saturdays at 8PM; the fee is $27.24 for adults.

ArtBar on the Terrace is a “blend of culture, cocktails, and community”. Set on the South Branch of the Raritan River for a stunning view with a peaceful waterfall. The event features crafted cocktails, wine, beer, and more, as well as a selection of snacks. You are even permitted to bring your own food or order it in to be delivered. There is no fee, and concerts feature various artists to be held on the last Friday of the months of June, July, and August from 6PM to 9PM.

Spark Night | first Thursday of each month | Zimmerli Art Museum, New Brunswick

Spark Night is the free monthly art party from 5PM to 8PM with rotating themes held on the first Friday of each month at the museum. It is open to the public, and light complimentary refreshments are offered. Register for free parking directly on the site through the parking portal.

Swirl: An Evening of Art and Wine | September 25 | Grounds for Sculpture, Hamilton

This outdoor event is a fundraiser, with garden tours and crafted food and wine from the chef + sommelier to pair perfectly with the sculptures. Member pre-sale will be from June 1 to June 14; General Public will be on sale June 15. Tickets will sell out so mark your calendars. Cost is $160 for members and $175 for non-members, tour times are from 5PM to 6:40PM. Other evening events of interest are being held on June 8, 12, and July 18.

The Battleship New Jersey is a museum located on the water at the Camden Waterfront, right across from Penn’s Landing in Philadelphia. For an $85 donation per person, you can spend a night experiencing, touring, and learning about this massive ship and its history. You will even sleep in the bunks as the sailors previously did.

The evening is in conjunction with the Amateur Astronomers Association of Princeton. It begins at 7:15PM with an extended discussion at the Planetarium and if conditions permit, continues on a short drive to Washington Crossing State Park, where you will utilize historic telescopes to visualize what you just learned. An RSVP form is required.

The museum hosts various trolley tours, including “The Ghosts of Cape May,” that run from 30 to 60 minutes, are offered at different time slots at night, and prices range from $20 – $30 for most. This is such a charming and historic area to visit on the New Jersey shore.
