If a trip to the beach was part of your plans this weekend, this health warning may disrupt that. Two Jersey Shore beaches in Cape May County and Ocean County were recently placed under swimming advisories after water samples taken at them revealed unsafe levels of fecal bacteria. Keep reading to learn about this swimming advisory announcement at the Jersey Shore.
About the Swimming Advisories
On the afternoon of Tuesday, June 9th, two beaches in Cape May County and Ocean County at the Jersey Shore were placed under swimming advisories after water samples taken showed high levels of fecal bacteria. The beaches placed under swimming advisories include:
-
-
2nd + JFK, an ocean beach in North Wildwood
-
Beachwood Beach West, a river beach in Beachwood
-
The samples were taken Monday and revealed over 104 colony forming units of enterococci, meaning a swimming advisory is required to be placed, according to NJBeaches.org. Enterococci is a bacteria type that could possible indicate contamination of bathing water with human or animal waste. An exceedance of the aforementioned concentration is considered potentially harmful to human health.
Here are some tips to consider if you plan to swim, as the beaches are not closed:
- Check before you visit with NJDEP’s updates at NJBeaches.org.
- Wait for the advisory to be lifted before swimming.
- Keep an eye out for lifeguard notices, which often post real-time alerts, though communication gaps may occur.
- Wash off after swimming and do not ingest beach water.
