From historic estates and formal flower gardens to coastal preserves and wooded walking trails, these destinations offer a chance to experience a quieter side of the shore. Whether visiting during peak bloom season or simply looking for a peaceful place to spend an afternoon outdoors, these gardens and parks showcase some of the region’s most beautiful landscapes. Allaire State Park | 4265 Atlantic Avenue, Wall

Allaire State Park combines history and nature, offering visitors a chance to explore both a preserved 19th-century village and hundreds of acres of scenic woodlands. Beyond the historic district, trails wind through forests along the Manasquan River and past native vegetation that changes with the seasons. Spring wildflowers and colorful fall foliage make some of the most popular times to visit. The park’s more natural, less manicured landscape provides a different experience from traditional botanical gardens while still delivering plenty of beauty. Admission to Allaire State Park is free.

Beach Plum Farm | 140 Stevens Street, West Cape May

Set on more than 60 acres in West Cape May, Beach Plum Farm blends working farmland with beautifully maintained gardens and scenic walking paths. Visitors can stroll past flower fields, vegetable gardens, orchards, and pasture areas while onsite. Seasonal blooms and harvests ensure that no two visits feel the same, with spring flowers and summer gardens giving way to fall produce and colorful foliage. The property also features farm animals, cottages, a market, and dining experiences that highlight ingredients grown on-site. Free parking is available, and reservations may be required for certain events and dining experiences

Calgo Gardens | 462 Adelphia Road, Freehold

Calgo Gardens is a whimsical garden experience that feels more like stepping into a storybook than visiting a traditional park. The grounds feature artistic landscaping, sculptures, ponds, bridges, and colorful plantings that create plenty of photo-worthy moments throughout the property. Walking paths weave through themed garden spaces, making each section feel a little different from the last. An on-site nursery and cafe add to the experience, making it easy to spend a few hours exploring and relaxing.

Cape May Point State Park | Cape May

While best known for birdwatching and coastal scenery, Cape May Point State Park is also one of the Shore’s most beautiful places to experience seasonal flora. Several easy trails wind through dunes, freshwater wetlands, forests, and meadows filled with native plants and seasonal wildflowers. The park is especially popular during spring and fall migration seasons, when bird activity is at its peak, and the scenery feels particularly vibrant. Scenic overlooks and views of the Cape May Lighthouse add to the appeal for photographers and nature enthusiasts alike. Admission is free, and parking is available near the visitor areas.

Deep Cut Gardens | 152 Red Hill Road, Middletown

Deep Cut Gardens spans 54 acres of beautifully maintained landscapes designed to inspire home gardeners and nature lovers alike. The grounds feature a colorful rose garden, ornamental display beds, a greenhouse, and seasonal plantings that change throughout the year. Its paved and gravel walking paths make it easy to explore the property, whether for a quick stroll or a leisurely afternoon outdoors. They also have educational programs and gardening resources onsite, and admission and parking are free.

Edith Duff Gwinn Gardens | 501 Central Avenue, Barnegat Light

Edith Duff Gwinn Gardens is located at the Barnegat Light Historical Museum and is maintained by the Garden Club of LBI. It’s a quiet coastal retreat that often flies under the radar compared to the area’s beaches and attractions. The garden features a thoughtfully designed collection of native plants, flowering perennials, and pollinator-friendly landscaping that thrives in the shore environment. Benches and winding paths create a peaceful atmosphere for a relaxing walk or a break from the summer crowds.

The Herbary is a one-of-a-kind garden center, gift shop, cafe, and tea house. The unique destination is nestled on a picturesque farm in Monmouth County, New Jersey. The gift shop sells perennials, annuals, herbs, shrubs, tropical plants, and garden accessories. The 15-acre property also features gazebos, trails, and a koi pond with a waterfall and is a wonderful spot to host a private dinner party or special event.

Holland Ridge Farms is New Jersey’s largest U-Pick farm. Every April the 300+ acre farm bursts into bloom with tulips for U-Pick Tulips: Spring Spectacular. In September, its flower fields are transformed into a sunflower dreamland. The U-Pick Sunflowers: Fall Festival features sunflowers in all different colors, as well as gladiolus, dahlias, and calla lilies. Both seasonal festivals feature photo props, food trucks, farmers’ and makers’ markets, musicians, animals, and more.

Holmdel Park & David C. Shaw Arboretum | 44 Longstreet Road, Holmdel

Holmdel Park is a scenic public park, featuring rolling hills, open meadows, ponds, and miles of walking paths. Within the park, the David C. Shaw Arboretum serves as an educational horticultural display dedicated to trees, shrubs, and woody plants that thrive in the region. The arboretum was designed to help homeowners discover attractive and practical landscape plants while showcasing a wide variety of species and cultivars. Seasonal blooms, colorful foliage, and well-maintained pathways make it enjoyable even for casual visitors with no gardening background. There is free admission and free parking.

Kula Urban Farm | 115 Atkins Avenue

Kula Urban Farm in Asbury Park is a hydroponic farm that supplies greens to the community, as well as local restaurants, on a weekly basis. The farm has cultivated community gardens on vacant lots and hosts classes, tours, workshops, volunteer days, farm-to-table dinners, yoga classes, and much more. Kula has a community compost with a series of compost bins along the rear of the old Turf Club on Atkins Avenue, south of Springwood Avenue. Its produce market is open to the public on Fridays between 11AM and 4PM.

Sayen House & Gardens | 155 Hughes Drive, Hamilton Square

Though located slightly inland from the Shore, Sayen House & Gardens is worth the drive for anyone who appreciates beautifully curated gardens. The 30-acre property is known for its extensive collection of azaleas, rhododendrons, and flowering trees that create a spectacular display each spring. Winding walking paths, footbridges, ponds, and hidden garden corners give the grounds a peaceful, park-like feel. Admission is free, and spring bloom season is widely considered the best time to visit.

Sister Mary Grace Burns Arboretum | Lakewood

Sister Mary Grace Burns Arboretum is located on the campus of Georgian Court University. Visitors can wander along its quiet and peaceful paths that are lined with trees and flowering plants. The arboretum is especially beautiful in spring and fall, when seasonal color transforms the landscape. Historic architecture throughout the campus adds another layer of charm to the experience. The arboretum is open for free self-guided tours from 8AM until dusk daily year-round, no registration required, or free personal guided tours (groups of 5 or more, by prior arrangement with Director Michael Gross).  All visitors must enter through the security gate, which is on 9th Street at the intersection of 9th Street and Lakewood Avenue at 900 Lakewood Ave.
