Discovering Glen Rock’s Roots
Glen Rock, located in Bergen County, is a calm town with deep historical roots. Its story begins with the Lenape people, who used a large boulder — now known as The Rock — as a trail marker along what is today Rock Road. In the 1600s, Dutch settlers arrived, drawn by the area’s fertile soil. They established farms, often relying on enslaved labor. By the 1890s, Glen Rock had about 600 residents and 100 farms, with many goods produced locally or sold in nearby Paterson.

At first, children in Glen Rock attended a small one-room schoolhouse. However, when plans for a larger, centralized school sparked disagreements over costs, tensions grew among residents. To take control of local decisions, the community voted to form its borough. Volunteers went door-to-door to map out the town’s boundaries, and on September 14th, 1894, Glen Rock officially became a borough, marking the start of its self-government. Today, Glen Rock continues to thrive, attracting new residents and businesses while maintaining its reputation as an exceptional place to settle in Bergen County.
