As the team puts it, Poppy was created with the gluten-free community in mind, whether someone has been gluten-free for years, is temporarily avoiding gluten, or is simply stopping in for something good from the bakery case. The shop officially celebrated its grand opening on September 20th and has already been met with plenty of enthusiasm. Poppy has shared on social media that baked goods have been selling out quickly since opening, so going earlier in the day might be the move for anyone hoping for the fullest selection.

Poppy does not currently have a full menu listed online, which means part of the fun is seeing what is waiting in the bakery case that day. The bakery describes its lineup as handcrafted gluten-free breads, pastries, cookies, + more. Early looks at the shop’s Instagram have also shown items like loaves of bread and cinnamon rolls.
The Local Girl reached out directly to founder Bri to learn more about the story behind Poppy. Bri is a registered dietitian who also studied baking and pastry, and she said the concept came from bringing those two backgrounds together. The bakery is named after her grandfather, whose artwork is featured throughout the space. Bri created Poppy as a place where people with celiac disease, gluten sensitivities, or other health conditions, including EOE, PCOS, and Hashimoto’s, can enjoy breads and pastries without feeling like they have to sacrifice quality, while also having options that feel a bit more health-conscious and balanced. Since opening, she said the response has been stronger than expected, with busy mornings and plans already underway to grow the team to keep up with demand.

More Gluten-Free Options in Ridgewood
Dedicated gluten-free bakeries are still relatively limited in Bergen County, making Poppy a particularly notable addition for residents with dietary restrictions. Ridgewood does have a few other spots with gluten-free treats. Mrs. Morley’s, located at 89 Washington Place, specializes in gluten-free, vegan, + nut-free baked goods. Sook Pastry on South Broad Street has select gluten-free desserts, as well as Sweet Kitchen which has other gluten-free menu options.
