Blossom Sisters Dance is a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing a dance education to children who may not otherwise have access to it. For over 20 years, the studio has opened its doors at 685 Main Street in Hackensack to families across Bergen County, creating not just dancers, but confident, college-bound young leaders. Bergen Girl had the opportunity to speak with co-owner Shatanya, whose personal journey is the heartbeat of the organization. Read on for more about Blossom Sisters Dance.
From Harlem to Hackensack
Growing up in Harlem, Shatanya always had a passion for dance, but unfortunately, formal classes weren’t financially accessible.
“I wasn’t able to afford dance classes growing up,” she shared. “But I always loved to dance.”
Shatanya did not let that stop her from continuing her passion. She found creative ways to pursue her goals. She learned wherever she could – at school programs, block parties, and community events. Because of this, Shatanya wanted to provide a safe space where kids could come and do what they love to do without having to worry about the cost.
“I wanted to give back,” Shatanya explained.
When she moved to Bergen County with her daughter, who was just four years old at the time, the vision began to take shape.
“We came to Bergen County and decided to stay in Hackensack,” she said. “That’s when we made the decision to open the dance studio — and we’ve now been here for 20 years.”
What to Expect
Blossom Sisters Dance offers a wide range of classes designed to cater to both skill and self-expression. Students can train in ballet, jazz, lyrical, contemporary, and hip hop. This March, the studio is expanding its creative offerings with a new drama class, and this spring, the team will introduce a yoga class for moms. This is a thoughtful way to bring even more community members into the fold.

Classes run throughout the week, typically beginning around 6:30PM and continuing until 9:00PM, with some starting as early as 5:00PM Saturday sessions begin at 10:00AM and run through 3:00PM, making it accessible for busy families.
But what truly sets Blossom Sisters apart is its mission. As a fully nonprofit studio, the organization works to ensure that finances are never the reason a child can’t do what they love.
“The most rewarding part of this job is seeing the kids grow up and go to college,” Shatanya said.
A Studio built on community
Blossom Sisters Dance hosts two major performances each year: a holiday show in December and a full recital in June. These performances aren’t just showcases; they’re celebrations of hard work, growth, and community support. Families and friends pack the audience, cheering on dancers who have spent months perfecting their routines.
The studio also welcomes donations through its website, helping sustain its mission of accessible arts education. Every contribution goes toward costumes, instruction, and keeping the doors open for the next generation of dancers.
In a world where extracurricular activities can often feel out of reach, Blossom Sisters Dance stands as a reminder that passion, perseverance, and community can make anything possible.
