Bergen County has no shortage of date-night spots, from cozy dining rooms to modern spaces for elevated bites + sips. Every new opening brings excitement to the local food scene, especially for couples + friend groups always on the hunt for their next place to try. Rare Bird, a recent addition to the Ramsey dining scene at 105 Lakeside Drive, is already making a strong impression with its broad menu and welcoming atmosphere. It is officially another spot worth bookmarking for your next night out. Read on for more about Rare Bird in Ramsey.
The Meaning Behind the Name Rare Bird
According to the restaurant’s website, the name Rare Bird is inspired by the Latin phrase rara avis, which is also the motto of the Ramsey Golf + Country Club. Historically, the phrase refers to something extraordinary and seldom seen, and that energy really comes through during the dining experience. The menu feels refreshingly different, and the vibe almost transports diners out of North Jersey for the evening.

Set within the grounds of the private club and surrounding residential community, Rare Bird is open to both members and the public. That accessibility made the visit even more exciting for Carli from The Bergen County Girl team, who loved getting a taste of the country club atmosphere without needing a membership. Carli’s golf expertise may be limited, but enthusiasm for good food and a great setting is not. From the moment you walk in, the space feels elevated + refined, truly fitting its country club surroundings + vibes. Guests are warmly greeted at the front, and the soft lighting, cozy fireplace, + expansive windows overlooking the green create an inviting yet high-end atmosphere that feels special without being stuffy.
The menu reads like an upscale Italian steakhouse with a sushi twist, which truly feels like the best of both worlds. This detail earned major points, especially with Carli, a proud sushi lover. The selection ranges from appetizers like tuna tartare to comforting pastas such as spicy rigatoni. Entrées include scallops, salmon, and other seafood favorites, along with classic handhelds for when a burger-and-fries moment is calling.
Carli went all in on her date night order with:
- Tuna + salmon sashimi (super fresh)
- Hamachi jalapeño roll (loved the subtle spice)
- Fall market salad with grilled chicken (the fresh pear on top made it)
- Slow-roasted Cheshire pork chop (arguably the best of the night + a generous portion)
- Two scoops of vanilla gelato (because a sweet ending is always needed)
Rare Bird offers a flexible, beautifully designed space that’s ideal for hosting events of all kinds. From birthdays and anniversaries to intimate celebrations, the team creates a welcoming yet elevated atmosphere that feels both personal and polished.
If you’re celebrating elsewhere, Rare Bird also offers catering with crowd favorites like Adana Pistachio, Halloumi Cheese with Apricots, smooth Muhammara, and a curated cheese plate. Whether it’s a birthday, family gathering, or corporate event, the menu features thoughtfully prepared dishes that travel well and make hosting feel effortless.
This new addition brings a fun vibe to Ramsey, a town already known for great dinner spots like Varka, Bici, and Café Panache. With Rare Bird now in the mix, Bergen County locals have another solid option to add to their rotation.
