What is a Trinket Box?

Trinket boxes are small containers traditionally used to hold jewelry, keepsakes, and other tiny items, but they’ve recently become part of a growing community exchange trend. People are creating DIY trinket boxes and placing them in public spaces like sidewalks or neighborhood corners, filling them with small items that others can take and replace in a “take one, leave one” system.

The trend has become especially popular with Gen Z as it reflects a shift toward slower, more mindful consumption and away from disposable buying habits and fast-moving micro trends like Labubus or Sonny Angels. Instead of purchasing new items, trinket boxes offer a low-cost, low-waste alternative that encourages reuse, surprise, and small dopamine hits from discovery, while also creating moments of real-world connection and a break from online consumption.

Asbury Park | 1200 Ocean Avenue

Asbury Park Fun House recently started a new trinket trade box right on the boardwalk, creating a fun little community spot for sharing tiny treasures. The public box encourages visitors to leave and swap small items like stickers, keychains, handmade crafts, blind box figurines, and other fun finds.

Belleville | 465 Franklin Avenue

This trinket box in Belleville, located at 456 Franklin Avenue invites passers to spread a little joy by trading handmade or fun-found treasures. Visitors are encouraged to swap just one trinket at a time, stick to handmade or discovered pieces, avoid leaving anything valuable or perishable, and to treat the box with care and respect.
