New Jersey Ranked the Third-Loudest State in America

If there’s one thing us New Jerseyians will do, it’s unapologetically be ourselves – and a recent study only reaffirms that. According to a survey by Preply, New Jersey ranks as the third loudest state in America. Keep reading to learn about the Preply survey and New Jersey ranking as the third loudest state in the U.S.

About the Survey

loudest states USA preply

The language-learning education platform Preply conducted a survey to determine the loudest states in the United States. It was based on a variety of behaviors considered obnoxiously loud or annoying, from phone speaker usage to chewing loudly. Residents in each state were surveyed and asked which of these activities they were guilty of to determine which state had the most obnoxiously loud population.

New Jersey ranked third on the survey, behind only Louisiana and Florida, with a loudness score of 90.6 out of 100. It was only behind the second-placed Florida by 0.1 point, and according to Preply, New Jersey respondents ranked their state second in the category of how loud residents of the state talk. However, in a similar study determining the loudest cities, New Jersey did not have a placement in the top ten.

According to the survey, some settings that are considered the “loudest” include bars, restaurants, public transportation, and malls. Considering our high volume of these spots (especially public transit), it isn’t surprising to see our Garden State ranked third.

Still, that doesn’t mean New Jersey is always loud. There are plenty of places to peruse if you’re in need of some peace and quiet, including restaurants where you don’t even have to shout, walkable (and scenic) trails, and plenty of quiet beaches.

And anyways – if it wasn’t a bit loud here, would it really be New Jersey?
