Ashtyn Asay Think you have what it takes to be the next American Idol? New Jersey singers will soon have the chance to audition face-to-face with a show producer, all from the comfort of home. As part of Idol Across America, the virtual nationwide search for the next singing superstar, American Idol will host a dedicated audition day for New Jersey residents on Thursday, August 27th. Auditions will take place through custom-built Zoom technology, giving hopefuls the opportunity to perform for a show producer and receive real-time feedback. The Next Idol
The show’s 25th season will mark another chapter for the long-running singing competition, which first began its search for America’s undiscovered talent in 2002. The 2026 season, which wrapped up in May, crowned Hannah Harper of Willow Springs, Missouri, as its winner.

Those interested in auditioning can register through the official American Idol auditions website. At the New Jersey audition, hopefuls will have the opportunity to perform directly for an American Idol producer. Those who advance could eventually be invited to audition before the show’s celebrity judges. Although judges for this season have yet to be confirmed, judges for season 24 included Luke Bryan, Lionel Richie, and Carrie Underwood.
Can’t make the audition on August 27th? Video audition submissions will also be accepted through October 15th. Audition videos require singers to answer a series of video and text questions before recording their performance. Contestants can sing an original song or a portion of a song and may perform a cappella, with their own musical accompaniment, or with a backing track. Performances must be unedited and cannot include post-production voice enhancements or digital distortion.

If selected for the next stage, an American Idol producer will contact the contestant by phone or email with information about the next audition. Contestants who make it to the celebrity-judged auditions will be responsible for arranging their own travel and accommodations.
Eligibility Requirements
For Season 25, eligible contestants must have been born between June 2nd, 1997, and February 15th, 2012, and must be legal U.S. residents with work authorization. There are also a few wardrobe rules to keep in mind. Contestants should avoid clothing featuring designer names, corporate or sports logos, copyrighted images, celebrity names or images, cartoon characters, or inappropriate words or messages.

There are additional restrictions for contestants with existing recording, songwriting, publishing, management, touring, or booking contracts, as well as anyone currently running for public office. Contestants and their immediate family or household members also cannot be employees, officers, or directors of companies or organizations directly involved with American Idol. Previous American Idol winners are not eligible to compete again. Ultimately, the show’s producers have final discretion over contestant eligibility and may disqualify anyone whose participation could create a conflict or appearance of impropriety.
American Idol and the Garden State
A New Jersey resident has yet to win American Idol, but several folks from the Garden State have come close. One of the state’s most successful contestants was Jax (Jaclyn Cole Miskanic), an East Brunswick native who finished in third place during Season 14 in 2015. More recently, Paterson’s We Ani made it to the Top 5 in Season 21, while several other New Jersey singers have earned Golden Tickets and advanced to Hollywood Week. In 2026, Sea Girt’s Julia Sienna Santiago and Paramus native Jake Thistle both earned Golden Tickets during Season 24, though neither ultimately claimed the title of American Idol.
