Every day comes with a new piece of absurd World Cup news (fans walking to MetLife Stadium, for example), and as the World Cup Final approaches, things are getting even wackier. It has been confirmed that FIFA will be selling pieces of the World Cup Final turf from MetLife Stadium, with each piece going for $450 to fans in the United States and Europe. The Details
The FIFA website has officially put pieces of the World Cup Final turf, known as “Piece of the Pitch”, up for sale on its shop for $450. Each segment of grass’s dimensions are listed at 17.5×17.5×17.5cm and come in a hinged shoulder box. “Own a genuine piece of football history with an authentic 2026 FIFA World Cup™ Piece of the pitch, permanently preserved in a premium acrylic with a USB keepsake. Each piece contains an original fragment of the iconic Final playing surface, making it a unique collectible that celebrates one of the world’s greatest sporting events,” the item’s website description reads.
The interesting plot twist for us New Jersey readers, however, is that the turf comes from Rutgers University. Multiple arenas hosting World Cup matches used Rutgers’ turf, including Philadelphia’s Lincoln Financial Field and Mexico City’s Estadio Azteca. “Michigan State University and [the] University of Tennessee led FIFA’s research into which turfgrasses would perform best at each of the World Cup stadiums. Their experts settled on Rutgers-bred cultivars as their top choice in most cases,” according to Rutgers’ website. Rutgers turfgrasses are cross-bred to create the most stress-resistant genes and are subsequently tested by a wear machine to determine resistance to stress. As of 2026, Rutgers turfgrass makes up 35% to 40% of the world’s grass seed production.
