Summer is now in full swing, with the Fourth of July behind us and nothing but sandy beaches and sunny days ahead of us. It’s been another busy week at the Jersey Shore, and while you’ve been (rightfully) enjoying all the fun and frivolity at the Shore, we’ve been keeping an eye on the news. We’ve got all the headlines to keep you up to speed. Among the highlights: several beaches showed high levels of bacteria after the holiday weekend; a new cafe opened in the Belmar Train Station; and Seaside Park will host a Hollywood movie production later this month.

– Stop-and-go traffic, heavy on the stop. An NJ Transit rail bridge connecting Point Pleasant and Brielle was closed to marine traffic due to high heat over the Fourth of July weekend, drawing criticism from residents and local leaders (NJ.com). 

Seaside Heights police began patrolling Berkeley Township’s portion of Pelican Island on July 1 under a $75,000 annual agreement designed to provide faster coverage from the nearby borough (Shorebeat).

Drone footage captured severe flooding along Lake Street in Asbury Park following heavy rain on Monday, July 6th (ABC News). 

– The team from Wake Coffee + Kitchen has opened a new cafe at the Belmar Train Station called Wavy’s (@wavys via Instagram). 

– Let’s skate. The Jersey Shore Roller Derby is rebuilding its Toms River league while welcoming new adult skaters, referees, and officials of all experience levels (Jersey Shore Online

– Community leaders in Wildwood have proposed replacing three local bridges that have been rated as being in poor condition (Yahoo News).

– Send in the sand. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is replenishing severely eroded beaches in Sea Isle City and other Cape May County towns with hundreds of thousands of cubic yards of offshore sand (NJ.com). 

– Strike up the band. NJ State Senator Vin Gopal, Assemblywoman Margie Donlon, M.D., and Assemblywoman Luanne Peterpaul, Esq. (D-Monmouth) announced that the FY2027 state budget includes $250,000 designated for the Count Basie Center in Red Bank (via a press release). 

– Check your pockets. A Jersey Cash 5 ticket sold at Country Farms on Route 70 West in Toms River won a $1,332,203 jackpot in the July 9th drawing (Jersey Shore Online).

– Say no to sludge. Monmouth County will remove sludge and sediment from the west end of Wesley Lake in Asbury Park to improve water flow and reduce future flooding risks (Patch). 

A new fro-yo spot in Ocean Township called Fro Yo Cafe Seaview is hosting its grand opening today, July 13th (@froyocafe_seaview via Instagram). 

– Fish tales. Families gathered at the Manasquan Reservoir and Turkey Swamp Park for Monmouth County’s annual two-day fishing derby (Jersey Shore Online). 

Asbury Park’s Practice Mural announced the completion of the first mural in the space, which is a spot for artists to try out their work (City of Asbury Park). 

– And, action! The Vietnam War-era spy thriller Trust the Man, starring Daniel Radcliffe, Lucas Hedges, and Jonathan Groff, will film at Seaside Park’s Charlroy Motel on July 29, with the Jersey Shore location standing in for 1968 Hawaii. (Shorebeat)

– Best beach behavior. Cove Beach in Cape May was reported to be the top beach in NJ for beach etiquette (Exoticca).

– Change of plans. Nearly two dozen New Jersey beaches were placed under swimming advisories after water samples showed elevated levels of bacteria (NJ.com).
