Northern Virginia students have plenty to be proud of this school year. Niche has released its 2026 Best Public Schools in Virginia rankings, and schools throughout Fairfax, Loudoun, Arlington, and Falls Church landed near the very top of the list. Northern Virginia schools took the first four spots in the statewide public high school ranking, while 13 NoVA schools made the top 20. Read on to see which Northern Virginia public schools ranked among the best in Virginia for 2026 and what went into the rankings.
How the Schools Were Ranked
Niche analyzed public schools using data from the U.S. Department of Education, state test scores, college information, and feedback collected from students and parents.
For public high schools, academics carry the most weight, accounting for 60 percent of the final ranking. Niche’s academic score incorporates factors such as state assessment proficiency, college enrollment data, and student and parent feedback about academics.
Culture and diversity account for 12.5 percent, while parent and student surveys about the overall school experience and Niche’s teacher grade each account for 10 percent. Clubs and activities, resources and facilities, and sports each make up another 2.5 percent.
That means the rankings look at more than test scores alone. The methodology also considers the day-to-day school experience, teachers, extracurricular opportunities, diversity, facilities, and other factors that can shape student life.
Thomas Jefferson High School for Science + Technology | Fairfax County
Virginia Ranking: No. 1
Fairfax County’s Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology earned the No. 1 spot among public high schools in Virginia.
The grades 9-12 magnet school has 2,108 students and a 17:1 student-teacher ratio, according to Niche, and received an overall A+ grade.
TJ is particularly known for its STEM-focused curriculum and research opportunities. Student feedback highlighted on Niche also points to challenging coursework, academic resources, and a collaborative student environment.
Independence High School | Loudoun County
Virginia Ranking: No. 2
Northern Virginia took the next spot on the list, too. Independence High School in Loudoun County ranked as the No. 2 public high school in Virginia.
The school has 2,166 students and a 14:1 student-teacher ratio and earned an overall A+ Niche grade.
Parents reviewing the school on Niche highlighted supportive staff and administrators, helping Independence move toward the top of the statewide ranking.
Lightridge High School | Loudoun County
Virginia Ranking: No. 3
Lightridge High School took the third spot statewide, giving Loudoun County two of Virginia’s three highest-ranked public high schools.
Lightridge has 2,030 students and a 14:1 student-teacher ratio. Niche gave the school an overall A+ grade.
Students highlighted the school’s supportive academic environment, teacher mentorship, extracurricular activities, and school spirit.

Rock Ridge High School | Loudoun County
Virginia Ranking: No. 4
Loudoun County scored yet another spot near the top of the list with Rock Ridge High School, which ranked No. 4 in Virginia.
The school has 1,599 students, a 14:1 student-teacher ratio, and an overall A+ Niche grade.
Reviews featured by Niche pointed to college preparation, AP and dual-enrollment courses, diversity, extracurricular activities, and academic resources as strengths.
With Rock Ridge’s placement, Northern Virginia schools officially claimed all four of the top four spots in Virginia’s 2026 public high school rankings.
John Champe High School | Loudoun County
Virginia Ranking: No. 6
John Champe High School ranked sixth statewide.
The Loudoun County school has 1,851 students and a 14:1 student-teacher ratio and received an overall A+ from Niche.
Students cited access to school resources, enthusiastic teachers, and a diverse student population among the positive parts of attending the school.
Oakton High School | Fairfax County
Virginia Ranking: No. 8
Fairfax County returned to the top 10 with Oakton High School, which ranked No. 8 in Virginia.
Oakton has 2,621 students, a 14:1 student-teacher ratio, and an overall A+ Niche grade.
Student feedback highlighted supportive teachers and the school’s college preparation resources, including college visits, scholarship workshops, tutoring, and guidance from Student Services.
Washington-Liberty High School | Arlington
Virginia Ranking: No. 10
Washington-Liberty High School landed at No. 10 statewide, putting an Arlington school among Virginia’s top 10.
The school has 3,044 students and an 18:1 student-teacher ratio. Washington-Liberty also earned an A+ overall grade from Niche.
Student feedback cited academics, extracurricular choices, and modern facilities among the school’s strengths.
Riverside High School | Loudoun County
Virginia Ranking: No. 11
Loudoun County continued its strong showing with Riverside High School, which ranked No. 11 in Virginia.
Riverside has 1,710 students and a 13:1 student-teacher ratio and earned an A+ Niche grade. Reviews featured by Niche highlighted the school’s staff and close-knit student community.
Yorktown High School | Arlington
Virginia Ranking: No. 12
Another Arlington school followed close behind. Yorktown High School ranked No. 12 statewide.
The school has 2,593 students and a 19:1 student-teacher ratio and earned an overall A+ grade.
Students highlighted academics, teachers, school spirit, sporting events, and extracurricular organizations as memorable parts of the Yorktown experience.
McLean High School | Fairfax County
Virginia Ranking: No. 13
McLean High School came in at No. 13 in Virginia.
The Fairfax County school has 2,428 students, a 13:1 student-teacher ratio, and an A+ overall Niche grade.
Reviews highlighted challenging coursework, teachers, extracurricular choices, and opportunities for students to explore their interests and prepare for college.
Langley High School | Fairfax County
Virginia Ranking: No. 16
Fairfax County’s Langley High School ranked No. 16 statewide.
Langley has 2,181 students and an 18:1 student-teacher ratio. It also received an overall A+ Niche grade, with reviewers noting the school’s teachers and advanced academic environment.

Meridian High School | Falls Church
Virginia Ranking: No. 18
Meridian High School in Falls Church came in at No. 18 among Virginia public high schools.
The school has 893 students and a 13:1 student-teacher ratio and received an A+ overall grade.
Student feedback highlighted Meridian’s rigorous academics, supportive teachers, welcoming atmosphere, clubs, and opportunities for students to get involved in the community.
Freedom High School | Loudoun County
Virginia Ranking: No. 20
Rounding out the statewide top 20 is Freedom High School in Loudoun County.
Freedom has 1,885 students and a 13:1 student-teacher ratio and earned an A+ overall Niche grade.
Students reviewing Freedom highlighted its teachers, staff, arts programs, STEAM opportunities, and range of student interests.
Northern Virginia Also Has Virginia’s No. 1 Public Elementary School
High schools weren’t the only Northern Virginia schools making an appearance at the top of Niche’s rankings.
Arlington Traditional Elementary School was ranked the No. 1 public elementary school in Virginia for 2026.
The PK-5 school has 624 students and a 14:1 student-teacher ratio and earned an overall A Niche grade. Parent feedback highlighted academics, teachers, communication with families, and the school’s diverse student community.
The Northern Virginia Schools in Virginia’s Top 20
Altogether, 13 of Niche’s 20 highest-ranked public high schools in Virginia are located in Northern Virginia:
- Thomas Jefferson High School for Science + Technology — Fairfax County
- Independence High School — Loudoun County
- Lightridge High School — Loudoun County
- Rock Ridge High School — Loudoun County

Loudoun County had the largest presence among Northern Virginia jurisdictions, landing six high schools in the statewide top 20. Fairfax County followed with four, Arlington had two, and Falls Church had one.
