The first day of August each year marks Stationery Day, a holiday that was originally started for people looking for local small-business stationery shops. This year, Stationery Day will fall on a Saturday, and we’re celebrating by sharing stores in Northern Virginia that carry cards, art supplies, pens, and everything you need to stock up on stationery. Read on for a list of local stores with good stationery selections, including some that aren’t necessarily stationery-themed.
Every Little Something | 109 W Washington Street, Middleburg

Every Little Something is a woman-owned boutique with a focus on gifts and stationery items. The team prioritizes the moments that are spent away from devices. Every Little Something sells delicate stationery classics such as notebooks, cards, coloring books and stamps, plus cozy home decorations like holiday ornaments and candles. Among the items Every Little Something sells, you’ll also find “about blanks,” which are described as “notebooks made from old covers and recycled materials.” Its owner creates personalized invitations for big events, and Every Little Something can also be shopped from online. In person, it’s open from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM on weekdays and from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM on weekends.
Gift & Gather | 307 Mill Street, Occoquan Historic District
Gift & Gather is a women-owned and small business stationery and gift store that started in 2017 as a space for local artists. Since then, the store has continued to highlight its connection to nearby creators. Some of Gift & Gather’s stationery items include fun stickers, bookmarks, notepads/notebooks, calendars and more, all of which can be purchased online. It also has a large selection of cards for occasions of all kinds, with silly designs and messages. Gift & Gather also sells all kinds of lifestyle items, from pet care goodies and home decorations, to self-care products and jewelry. Additionally, the shop makes its own candles and occasionally hosts workshops, although there haven’t been any new ones announced on its website recently. It’s open from 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Sunday, and from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday.
GoldensHill Papercrafts | 12644 Chapel Road, Clifton
GoldensHill Papercrafts was created with all of the local creators in mind, from all areas of interest, and this year the store celebrated its 21st anniversary. At GoldensHill, you’ll find items such as colorful and assorted paper pads, stickers, journals, pens and ink; new arrivals are also showcased on the website. In addition to selling all different kinds of artsy items, GoldensHill also hosts a variety of classes right at the store where you can get your craft on. Some upcoming classes include card making, drawing/doodling and scrapbooking. GoldensHill is open from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday and from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM on the first and third Saturdays each month.
Hitchcock Paper | 125 Mill Street, Occoquan Historic District

Hitchcock Paper is a woman-owned boutique with a main focus on stationery, selling things like journals, pens, planners, and office decorations. Hitchcock also has fun cards that stand out for their art, designs, and quirky phrases, both from its own brand and from other designers. It also highlights small businesses, artists, and more through its item selection, and sells things like puzzles and games. The shop also has a dedicated section to children’s books, toys, and activities under the name of Tiny Paper Co, which is on the upper floor. Some exciting additions are also on the horizon, as Hitchcock Paper is expanding in August 2026. It’s open from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM Monday through Saturday and from 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM on Sunday.
Lil’ Thingamajigs | Multiple Locations
At Lil’ Thingamajigs, you can celebrate Stationery Day with items that are from Asia, as the store offers items that are imported from Korea and Japan. The store doesn’t necessarily specialize in stationery, as it sells a variety of things – thingamajigs, if you will – but it has a selection including pens, stickers, highlighters, sticky notes, memo pads, and more. Some items are also themed, so if you have a favorite animal, character or franchise (like Sanrio, Tamagotchi or Animal Crossing), there’s a good chance you can find a sticker sheet or something of the sort with this special design on it. Lil’ Thingamajigs also has an online shop that you can purchase from and use to browse all of the above unique items. There are multiple locations for Lil’ Thingamajigs in Northern Virginia, including Annandale, Centreville, and Herndon. The store hours vary for Fridays and Saturdays based on location, but it is open from 11:00 AM to 9:00 PM on Monday through Thursday and from 12:00 PM to 9:00 PM on Sunday.
Open to Being | 2424 26th Road S, Arlington
Open to Being is a woman-owned stationery-themed store that officially began in 2020, although its owner has a longer history with art and design. The store’s thoughtful name describes both what motivates the owner to create, and what the business hopes its practice and designs will share with customers. The store offers original designs that are created in its own letterpress studio, like cards with minimalist designs and deeply meaningful messages. You’ll also find things like notebooks, pencils, decorative art, totes and bookmarks. Open to Being also hosts events, like the upcoming Theresa’s Table Curated Shopping where you can buy stationery from vendors, and workshops such as designing your own invitations and cards. When Open to Being isn’t having a workshop or event, it’s open based on appointment.

Penny Post | 1201 King Street, Alexandria

Penny Post is a woman-owned stationery shop that values both connecting with others and items that are made by hand. At Penny Post, you’ll find office and personal use items such as stickers, washi tape, sticky notes, calendars, and fountain pens. It also has a large selection of cards and postcards, with bright and colorful artwork, and an online shop that showcases all of their stationery goodies. Penny Post also participates in many community events and hosts its own, such as a Hobonichi Hangout that invites owners of the planner to meet up and chat about it and this past month’s Fountain Pens 201, which called for lovers of paper, pens, and ink to come and hang out. In August, the store will also be doing some workshops surrounding calligraphy. Penny Post is open from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM Monday through Thursday, from 10:00 AM to 7:00 PM Friday through Saturday, and from 12:00 PM to 5:00 PM on Sunday.

Bards Alley Bookshop | 110 Church Street NW, Vienna
Woman-owned and known as “Vienna’s indie bookstore,” Bards Alley was started in July 2017 to serve as a spot for readers of all ages to discuss and enjoy all things books. The name represents the fact that the bookstore includes a mixture of both classic novels and those that are modern. In addition to this collection, at Bards Alley you’ll also find gifts and stationery items. You can buy from Bards Alley online through a few different vendors, including Bookshop, Libro.fm and Square Shop. The business also hosts events such as book clubs and author talks – sometimes at separate locations – and is preparing for a future move to a different Vienna address. Bards Alley is open from 10:00 AM to 7:00 PM Tuesday through Saturday and from 12:00 PM to 5:00 PM on Sunday.
Birch Tree Bookstore | 11 West Market Street, Leesburg
This is a woman-owned book and plant store in charming downtown Leesburg. It has all kinds of fun stuff, including cards, pens + notebooks.
Cozy Calico Books | 199 Union Street, Occoquan

Cozy Calico Books is a recently opened jewelry-store-turned-bookstore managed by an author and her family. Fittingly cat-themed, this shop has a large selection of books, but also specializes in “bookish gifts” as well, such as bookmarks and cards. There are an assortment of events that are put on at the bookstore as well, including book clubs, writing classes, author talks, and storytimes. This past month, it also held a cat adoption event in collaboration with Brandywine Valley SPCA. Cozy Calico is open from 11:00 AM to 6:00 PM Tuesday through Saturday and from 12:00 PM to 5:00 PM on Sunday.

This home and gift boutique carries letterpress notecards, notebooks, greeting cards, and stationery accessories.
Fonts Books | 6262b Old Dominion Drive, McLean
This neighborhood spot in the Chesterbrook area of McLean in Fall of 2023 and quickly became a part of the community. This tiny-but-mighty shop has 1,000 square feet of retail space, but somehow manages to pack in something for every type of reader. Kids books, adult fiction and non-fiction, journaling supplies, gifts, and more are available here. Fonts Books hosts monthly book clubs and regular author events. The store is open from 10AM to 5PM on Tuesdays, Saturdays, and Sundays, and is open from 10AM to 7PM on Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays. The store is closed on Mondays.
Freeman Store Museum Gift Shop | 131 Church Street NE, Vienna

This museum and country store is a fun touchpoint to Vienna’s past. The basement is full of used books for sale and the main floor is full of all kinds of goodies, from locally made candles and soaps to artwork, stickers, and of course, stationery.

Friends to Lovers Bookstore | 301 Cameron Street, Alexandria

This romance-only bookstore has quickly become one of Alexandria’s hottest destinations. It’s an LGBTQ-welcoming space full of all kinds of romance novels plus fun and cheeky stationery and gifts. In particular, we like the LGBTQ-friendly greeting card selection.

Old Town Books is a woman-owned bookstore that also carries some journals and stickers. Old Town Books has an online shop and hosts events such as book clubs, storytimes, and chats with authors. It also has a dedicated summer 2026 reading guide for all ages. Old Town Books is open from 10:00 AM to 7:00 PM daily.

One More Page Books is a woman-owned bookstore that was started in January 2011. Through its business, it prioritizes not only books, but also human connections. There are a lot of different things to discover at One More Page Books: in addition to its variety of things to read, it also highlights its collection of puzzles, chocolate and wine. There’s also a collection of assorted notecards, stickers and some journals (although some may only be available online through their shop, and not in store.) One More Page Bookstore also hosts a variety of events, with some previous ones including author talks, book launches, and book clubs. This shop is open from 11:00 AM to 4:00 PM on Tuesday, Saturday and Sunday, and from 11:00 AM to 7:00 PM on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.
Pippin Toy Co. | 1310 King Street, Alexandria
This toy shop has all kinds of fun stuff, including the perfect birthday card to accompany a gift, beautiful journals and pens, and even some teaching tools for young ones learning cursive.
Red Barn Mercantile | 1117 King Street, Alexandria

Scrawl Books is an independent bookstore located in Reston Town Center. In addition to books for children, teens, and adults, there are puzzles, stickers, and other gifts available in the store. The store frequently hosts author talks and literary special events such as the Summer Nights Romance Panel. Each month, the team hosts several book clubs, craft nights, trivia nights, storytimes, and more. We like the incredible selection, helpful staff, and the curbside pickup option. Scrawl Books is open Monday- Thursday 10AM to 8PM; Friday and Saturday from 10AM to 8:30PM; and Sundays from 11AM to 6PM. Curbside pickup is available daily from 12PM to 6PM.

It’s nearly impossible to walk out of this store empty-handed. Everything is made from Virginia-based makers, and that includes an incredible array of stationery + greeting cards. The shop frequently hosts workshops featuring local artists with hands-on demonstrations for participants.
Sleepy Dragon Books | 9101 Center Street, Manassas

Sleepy Dragon Books is a new woman-owned bookstore in Manassas. It specializes in the fantasy genre, but sells books of all kinds. There are also gifts and goodies such as pens, coloring and watercolor books, and journals. It also happens to be owned by the same person who owns Honey & Ivy, a gluten-free bakery where you’ll find quite a few of Sleepy Dragon Books’ events, such as book bedazzling and book clubs. Sleepy Dragon Books is available to order from on both Bookshop and Libro.fm. It’s open from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM Monday through Friday and from 9:00 AM to 7:00 PM on the weekends.
Torpedo Factory Art Center | 105 N Union Street, Alexandria

Naturally, a space filled to the brim with talented local artists will have choices galore. In addition to the artists’ work, the Torpedo Factory also has an art supplies store on site. The materials are the same ones used by artists who are a part of the Art League.

This incredible space is a second store for art supplies and an art instruction facility. You can find secondhand art supplies here, which is fun to try out a new hobby or take a workshop and get a new skill. Supplies include everything you need for card making including paper, markers, glitter, and more.
