One of Vienna’s newest coffee shops is bringing Japanese-inspired café culture to the heart of downtown. Kin Espresso, a family-owned café located at 145 Church Street NW, serves handcrafted coffee, ceremonial-grade matcha, and specialty drinks in a bright, minimalist space designed for lingering. Inspired by the hospitality and attention to detail found in Japanese cafés, Kin Espresso was created as a place where the Northern Virginia community can gather, connect, and feel at home. From Dream to Reality
Founder Urnaa Tsatsralt grew up in Mongolia and moved to the United States nearly 20 years ago. “Northern Virginia has been home for a long time, and when we found Vienna, we really loved the community,” she said. “It felt like the right place for Kin.” That strong sense of community ultimately made Vienna the ideal home for Kin Espresso, thanks to its welcoming atmosphere and small-town feel.
The inspiration for Kin Espresso didn’t come from one specific café, but from Japanese café culture as a whole. “We love Japanese café culture, the attention to detail, the atmosphere, and the hospitality,” Urnaa explained. “We wanted to bring that feeling to Northern Virginia while creating something that felt like our own.”
When developing the concept, Urnaa focused on hospitality, thoughtful presentation, and creating a memorable experience for every customer. These principles became the foundation for Kin Espresso. Ultimately, she wanted to create a place where people would enjoy spending time rather than simply grabbing coffee to go.
The name “Kin” was chosen intentionally, as it means family or connection in Japanese. “Since we’re a family-owned café, it felt like the perfect name,” Urnaa shared with The Fairfax Girl.

That sense of family and connection is at the heart of Kin Espresso, where the team strives to create a space where guests feel comfortable, welcomed, and connected each time they visit.
“We hope everyone who visits feels like they’re walking into a place where they belong,” Urnaa said.
What to Order + What’s Next
Inside Kin Espresso, visitors will find a bright, clean, minimalist space with a warm and welcoming feel. It’s the kind of spot that works equally well for studying or working remotely, catching up with friends, or settling in for a quiet coffee break.
During our visit, we tried the Kyoto Matcha and Banana Pudding Matcha, both made with Japanese ceremonial-grade matcha. The Kyoto Matcha had a rich, earthy flavor, while the Banana Pudding Matcha put a creamy, slightly sweet spin on the classic drink. Together, they showcase Kin Espresso’s focus on quality ingredients and carefully crafted beverages.
Although the café is still fairly new, Urnaa hopes Kin Espresso will become a true neighborhood gathering place. So far, one of the most rewarding parts of opening the café has been watching first-time customers turn into regulars.

“Seeing familiar faces come back,” Urnaa said. “When customers bring their friends or tell us they enjoyed their visit, it reminds us why we started Kin.” Those repeat visits align with the café’s original mission of creating connections through hospitality. Urnaa and her team hope Kin Espresso will be part of the Vienna community for years to come.
Kin Espresso is located at 145 Church Street NW in Vienna and is open Monday through Friday from 7AM to 4PM and Saturday and Sunday from 8AM to 4PM.
