There’s a special spot in downtown Clifton where brides have their magical, movie moment picking ‘the one’ – their gowns. Clifton Bridal, located at 12642 Chapel Road, is owned by Clifton native Katie Welsh, who used her experience as a bride to start a business. The Fairfax Girl chatted with Katie to learn more about her backstory and what role the charming town of Clifton plays in the bridal gown shopping experience. Read on for more with Katie Welsh of Clifton Bridal.
About Katie
Katie Welsh was born and raised in Clifton, Virginia, and always knew entrepreneurship was in her future. “I went to college at Loyola Marymount University in LA and studied communications with a concentration in entrepreneurship,” Katie said. “Entrepreneurship is really where I found myself.” Katie stayed in LA for a bit after college, working in real estate, and moved back to Clifton with her then-fiancé (now husband) in 2023.
Katie loved her experience working in real estate in LA, and wanted to find the same environment in Northern Virginia. “It wasn’t really working out how I had hoped,” she said. “And at the same time, I was planning my wedding and getting a closer look at all of these other new-to-me businesses.” Katie started thinking about the positive and negative experiences she’d had, especially with wedding dress shopping, and put her entrepreneurial skills to work.
“I originally made a business plan for my own amusement,” Katie said. “I wanted to take all of the good experiences I had and make them into something. I was sharing it with my mom and she encouraged me to see what I could do with it.” Katie started casually looking for real estate when a commercial space in her hometown of Clifton opened up. “It really fell into place,” she said. “We realized that Clifton is actually the perfect spot for a bridal shop.” The space has high ceilings and lots of natural light, making it an ideal spot for bridal gowns.

By December 2023, Clifton Bridal was up and running. Katie said that other bridal shop owners are some of her biggest supporters. “They have been so generous to me with their time and expertise,” she said. “I’ve had some wonderful mentors.”
Clifton Bridal
The charm of the town of Clifton itself is part of the experience of shopping at Clifton Bridal. “So many people have never come here before, and they say it’s like being in a Hallmark movie town,” she said. “Brides can come out and have a full day, in addition to shopping. They can get a great meal at one of the restaurants and go wine tasting at Paradise Springs.”
Katie has worked hard to create a personalized, intimate experience for the brides who shop at Clifton Bridal. “We take just one bride at a time, and limit the guests to five,” she said. “We want it to be a joyful experience.”

Guests can enjoy champagne during the appointment, while the brides can take their time trying on gowns and looking at all the angles in the well-lit, oversized mirror. “I want brides to have that magical movie moment,” she said.
Clifton Bridal sells new and pre-loved gowns. While the average time to order a bridal gown is four to six months, Katie also has gowns that can be rush-ordered in as little as one week. Katie sends her brides to Tang’s in Manassas for alterations.

“Our aesthetic is clean, minimal, modern, classic, and timeless,” Katie said. “Our gowns don’t have a lot of beading or lace; it’s a lot of satin and clean lines.” Some of the designers featured at Clifton Bridal include Hera Couture, Kyha Bride, and Jenny Yoo Collection.
Visits to Clifton Bridal are by appointment only, Wednesday through Sunday. The Clifton Bridal website is updated with its in-stock gowns and upcoming trunk shows and designer events.
