A Barbie Exhibit With 250+ Vintage Dolls Is Coming to Virginia

Barbie is taking over a Virginia museum this fall. Barbie™: A Cultural Icon is coming to the Virginia Museum of History & Culture in Richmond for a limited-time run from October 17th, 2026, through January 18th, 2027. The exhibition looks back at more than six decades of Barbie history through hundreds of dolls, fashion, advertising, immersive displays, + more. The museum is located at 428 N Arthur Ashe Boulevard in Richmond,  making it an easy day trip for Northern Virginia residents. About Barbie™: A Cultural Icon

The Virginia Museum of History & Culture, located at 428 N Arthur Ashe Boulevard in Richmond, will host the exclusive Mid-Atlantic engagement of Barbie™: A Cultural Icon. For anyone who grew up collecting Barbies, or still has a box of them tucked away somewhere,  there will be plenty of nostalgia.

The exhibition explores Barbie’s evolution from a children’s toy introduced in 1959 to one of the most recognizable figures in pop culture. Visitors can see how Barbie’s clothing, careers, identities, + overall image have changed alongside fashion and culture over the past 65+ years. The collection includes more than 250 vintage Barbie dolls and fashion ensembles, with pieces representing every decade since Barbie’s debut. There will also be more than 50 historical artifacts and pieces of advertising memorabilia.

Visitors can expect original fashion designs, vintage advertisements, designer interviews, + immersive installations throughout the exhibit.

Highlights include Barbie dolls and fashion from every decade since 1959, Barbie’s 65th Blue Sapphire Anniversary Fashion Dolls, historical advertisements, + displays examining Barbie’s influence on fashion, identity, careers, and social change. There will also be five immersive photo stations, including one featuring the Barbie Ultra ‘Vette.

The exhibition was created and toured by Illusion Projects Inc., curated by Karan Feder in partnership with Mattel Inc., and distributed by Dala Projects.

Exhibit Dates + Tickets

Barbie™: A Cultural Icon will be on display from October 17th, 2026 through January 18th, 2027.

Admission to the Barbie exhibition is included with regular museum admission. Virginia Museum of History & Culture members receive free admission.

For non-members, regular museum admission is:

  • Adults: $15
  • Seniors 65+, educators, students, active military + veterans: $13
  • Youth ages 6-17: $10
  • Children 5 + under: Free
  • VMHC Members: Free

The museum is open daily from 10AM to 5PM.
