The Fourth of July weekend is almost here, and with it comes fireworks, cookouts, travel plans, and, this year, some important local updates to keep on your radar. Between Metro service changes, possible flight impacts at National Airport, hot weather, and cooling resources throughout Northern Virginia, there are a few things locals should know before heading out for the holiday weekend. Read on for everything you need to know about Fourth of July week, transit updates, and the weather in Northern Virginia.
WMATA Service Updates for July 4th
For those heading into Washington, DC, for fireworks or holiday events, Metro is once again going to be a major part of the weekend travel plan. Metro rides will be free after 5PM on Saturday, July 4th.
WMATA’s Independence Day 2026 schedule currently lists Metrorail service for Saturday, July 4th, from 6AM to 2AM. First and last trains can vary by station, so riders should check WMATA’s Rider Tools before heading out, especially if traveling early in the morning or late after fireworks.
Metrobus service details are still listed as TBD, so anyone planning to rely on a bus route should check the route-specific schedule closer to the holiday. Given the expected crowds around DC and the National Mall, WMATA is encouraging riders to plan ahead and use official trip planning tools for the most up-to-date service information.
Flight Restrictions at DCA
Travelers flying in or out of Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport should also keep a close eye on their flight status. According to MWAA, special event flyovers, fireworks, and aerial displays are planned in Washington, DC, this summer as part of America 250 celebrations. During these events, flights may be paused at the airport. DCA has specifically flagged July 3rd and July 4th as dates when travelers should expect disruptions. Flights are cancelled for several hours on July 3rd, and there are no flights after 12PM on July 4th.
Weather Updates
Northern Virginia is looking at a hot and humid holiday stretch, with dangerous heat expected to build across much of the region heading into the Independence Day weekend.
The National Weather Service Baltimore/Washington office says dangerous, record-breaking heat is expected to intensify across much of the central and eastern United States this week, with heat indices likely exceeding 100 degrees in some areas. The heat is expected to continue across the eastern United States through the Independence Day holiday weekend.
For Fairfax, the July 4th forecast currently includes hot conditions, with a high in the 90s and the potential for thunderstorms. That means outdoor plans may come with two concerns: heat during the day and possible storms later on.
Anyone planning to attend parades, fireworks, barbecues, or outdoor events should bring water, wear lightweight clothing, take shade breaks, and keep an eye on changing weather alerts throughout the day.
Cooling Center Resources in Northern Virginia
With extreme heat in the forecast, Northern Virginia residents should also know where to go if they need a place to cool down.
Fairfax County activates its heat plan when the National Weather Service issues a heat advisory, watch, or warning, usually about 24 hours in advance. During extremely hot days, residents can cool off at county-designated cooling centers, which may include libraries, community centers, REC centers, human services offices, and other county facilities during normal operating hours.
Fairfax County also has an online cooling center map that allows residents to search by address or location to find nearby facilities.
In Arlington, the county reminds residents that extreme heat can be dangerous, especially when high heat and humidity last for multiple days. Arlington lists free places to keep cool, such as spraygrounds, community centers, libraries, and shopping malls.
The City of Alexandria also provides seasonal and emergency warming and cooling options during the summer and winter months. In Alexandria, libraries, recreation centers, and shelters may serve as cooling options for residents who do not have adequate cooling at home. The city has also noted that recreation centers can function as cooling centers during extreme heat, with Alexandria libraries available during normal operating hours.
Before heading to any cooling location, residents should check operating hours, since holiday schedules may vary.
Fireworks Schedule
Dozens of communities have announced fireworks shows for the July 4th holiday. However, attendees are encouraged to check with local organizers in case of weather-related cancellations or postponements.
