If there’s a universal experience for Northern Virginia residents, it’s sitting in traffic and wishing there was a better way to get around. The Monument Parking garage is as close to that wish being granted as a person could get, as it is centrally located, has access to several Metro and Fairfax Connector routes, and it’s free to use. The garage, located at 12113 Government Center Parkway, is Fairfax’s best-kept secret for everyone from daily commuters to weekend visitors. Read on for more about the Monument Garage in Fairfax.
About the Garage
The Monument Drive Commuter Parking Garage and Transit Center opened in June 2024 and has become a key part of many Northern Virginia residents’ transit plans. It has over 800 parking spaces and a secure bike room, all free to use. There are also 24 charging stations for electric vehicles. The garage is a stop on several local transit routes, including a direct route to the Vienna Metro Station and Fairfax Connector routes. There is a kiss-and-ride lane and a setup for slugging.
The project is a public-private partnership between the Virginia Department of Transportation, Northern Virginia Transportation Authority (NVTA), and the Fairfax County Department of Transportation. The project is part of Fairfax County’s larger efforts to expand Fairfax Connector service along I-66.
Then-District Supervisor James Walkinshaw expressed his enthusiasm at the 2024 opening of the garage, stating, “This project exemplifies Fairfax County’s dedication to creating a robust, multimodal transportation network. The Monument Drive facility will greatly improve the daily commutes of our residents, reduce traffic congestion, and support our environmental goals.”
Commuter Tool
The garage has everything a Northern Virginia commuter could want: convenient location, tons of spots, and access to dozens of local transit routes. The Monument Garage is an incredible tool for daily commuters, visitors, or anyone looking to take a break from driving.
First, the garage’s location at 12113 Government Center Parkway in Fairfax is easily accessible from Route 66, Route 29, which run east-west, and the Fairfax County Parkway, which runs north-south. Users from throughout Fairfax County can significantly reduce the time spent in their cars by parking at the garage and completing their journeys from the Garage.
Second, the garage is a great jumping-off point for all kinds of journeys. Several Fairfax Connector and Metrobus routes serve the garage directly. There is also a route directly connecting the garage to the Vienna Metro Station: even during rush hours, riders won’t wait longer than 10 minutes to catch the next bus.
Finally, the parking at the garage is free. For daily commuters, this could mean significant cost savings. For those planning a day in the city or exploring the rest of Northern Virginia, this makes it an easy choice to park and then ride.
The Monument Garage might be Fairfax’s best-kept secret, but good things should be shared. Visit its website for more information about the Monument garage and to plan your next trip.
