The fall leaves are practically synonymous with election season, and this year is no different. Virginia voters will elect a new Governor, Lieutenant Governor, Attorney General, and state Delegates. Tuesday, November 4th, 2025, is Election Day. Here’s what you need to know to make your voting plan. Read on for more about voting in Virginia.
Voter Eligibility
- Be a resident of Virginia (a person who has come to Virginia for temporary purposes and intends to return to another state is not considered a resident for voting purposes).
- Be a U. S. Citizen.
- Be 18 years old (any person who is 17 years old and will be eighteen years of age at the next general election shall be permitted to register in advance and also vote in any intervening primary or special election).
- Not be registered and plan to vote in another state.
- Not currently declared mentally incompetent by a court of law.
- If convicted of a felony, your right to vote must have been restored.
How to Register
There are several ways to register to vote.
- Online at www.elections.virginia.gov/citizen-portal
- Via your local general registrar, or at a local Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) office
- Through a campaign with voter outreach, such as a candidate, political party, or voter education campaign
- Election day voter registration – voters can register on site on election day. They will be given a provisional ballot.

How to Vote
Voters have options when it comes to how they vote.
- In Person – Voters can vote in person on Election Day, November 4th, 2025. Voters can also vote in person during the Early Voting period.
- Early Voting – The early voting period is Friday, September 19th, 2025 through 5PM on Saturday, November 1st, 2025 – Early voting period. The early voting locations may not be the same as your usual polling place, so be sure to check.
- By Mail – Voters can request a ballot by mail. Voters can also choose to receive all future ballots by mail.
- Absentee – Voters can request a ballot by mail to vote absentee.
Key Dates
- October 24th, 2025 – deadline to register or update an existing voter registration and deadline to request a mail-in ballot
- September 19th, 2025 through 5PM on Saturday, November 1st, 2025 – Early voting period
- November 5th, 2025 – Election Day
Voting and Accessibility
Any voter, regardless of their disability status, is eligible to register to vote. These voters can register online or in person. Other ways voting is made accessible:
Emergency Absentee – voters can request an emergency absentee ballot in two circumstances: unexpected illness or hospitalization, or an unexpected obligation due to your job or a family member’s death or hospitalization.
Physical accommodations – all polling places meet ADA standards for accessibility, and there is at least one voting machine in each polling place that can accommodate a voter with a disability. Election officials can assist voters.
Curbside voting – voters 65 and up or voters with a disability can vote without leaving their vehicles. Election officials can assist voters in completing curbside voting.
