December Pub Scholars Topic – From Fairfax to the High Seas: Maritime Engineering and Technology
What does shipbuilding have to do with Fairfax City?
More than you might think. As the U.S. looks to rebuild its shipbuilding capacity and strengthen the maritime industrial base, Northern Virginia is playing a role in the research, technology, and talent behind that effort. Fairfax City is building connections to this ecosystem through its partnership with Naval Surface Warfare Center Carderock, while George Mason University is advancing research and education in maritime engineering and robotics.
In this installment of the Pub Scholars series, Mason professor Dr. Leigh McCue-Weil will explore the rapidly evolving world of maritime technology, including robotics, ship design, and naval engineering. She will highlight Mason’s maritime research at the Potomac Science Center in Woodbridge and its new pier, and discuss how partnerships among universities, government, and industry are shaping the future of the field. She will also highlight how STEM education, capstone projects, and other initiatives are introducing students to naval engineering careers.
The conversation will explore how regional partnerships are strengthening America’s maritime capabilities and preparing the next generation of engineers and innovators.
