There’s always an opportunity to give back to those in need, whether supporting local shelters, protecting the environment, or helping neighbors experiencing food insecurity. Bergen County has plenty of organizations where residents can make an impact through volunteering, and The Bergen Girl has rounded up a list to follow. Read on for a list of ways to volunteer in Bergen County this fall 2026.
Bergen County Animal Shelter + Adoption Center | 100 United Lane, Teterboro
Volunteers at the Bergen County Animal Shelter + Adoption Center help improve the lives of animals by walking dogs, socializing cats, and helping shelter pets develop behaviors needed for life in a future home. FYI: Volunteers must apply and complete the shelter’s required training before starting work.
Bergen County CASA | One Bergen County Plaza, Hackensack
This organization is an advocate for children who have experienced abuse or neglect and are living in foster care. Volunteers will have the opportunity to acquaint themselves with an assigned child, communicate with those involved in the child’s life, and make recommendations in their best interest.
Bergen New Bridge Medical Center | 230 East Ridgewood Avenue, Paramus
Volunteers here will support patients, long-term care residents, visitors, and staff. Assignments are available across different areas of the medical center and typically involve tasks such as patient assistance, administrative work, and support for the center’s departments.
Bergen Volunteers | 64 Passaic Street, Hackensack
Bergen Volunteers is an organization that connects individuals, families, and groups with service opportunities throughout the county. It has volunteer-led programs designed to support seniors, families in need, and at-risk youth, with a need for mentoring, home maintenance assistance, friendly visits, and helping with community projects.

Center for Food Action | Multiple Locations
Center for Food Action provides emergency food, housing, utility, and heating assistance to local families. Volunteer work includes sorting, packing, stocking, and distributing groceries at locations throughout Bergen County. On-site volunteers must be at least 16 years old, and an application must be completed before shifts can be registered for.
Center for Hope + Safety | 12 Overlook Avenue, Rochelle Park
Center for Hope + Safety provides services and resources to domestic violence survivors throughout Bergen County. Volunteers help with community outreach, donation drives, fundraising, and other projects that support the organization’s clients + mission.
Englewood Health | 350 Engle Street, Englewood
There are volunteer programs for adults, college students, and high school students at this hospital, with volunteers providing support dependent on the team’s current needs.
Family Promise of Bergen County | 100 Dayton Street, Ridgewood
This organization is dedicated to supporting working families that are victims of homelessness, and also provides meals to people in need. Volunteers can help with serving dinners, staffing the Family Center on weekends, and assisting children with activities.
Flat Rock Brook Nature Center | 443 Van Nostrand Avenue, Englewood
Volunteers at Flat Rock Brook Nature Center can help maintain its preserve and provide educational programming to the community. Some tasks are leading school groups, assisting at special events, completing outdoor conservation projects, and maintaining trails.
Habitat for Humanity of Bergen County | 121 Carver Avenue, Westwood
Habitat for Humanity works to build and preserve safe housing for local families in Bergen County. There are both individual and group volunteer opportunities, which involve participating in hands-on build days and helping with community projects. FYI: No previous construction experience is needed for many of these roles, so don’t hesitate to sign up.
Pony Power Therapies | 1170 Ramapo Valley Road, Mahwah
Pony Power Therapies is dedicated to connecting people with disabilities and other life challenges to horses, farming, and nature. Volunteers assist during lessons and help care for the farm, gardens, horses, and small animals. Note that training is provided and required to prepare volunteers for their assigned roles.
Ramapo-Bergen Animal Refuge | 2 Shelter Lane, Oakland
Ramapo-Bergen Animal Refuge provides shelter, medical treatment, and behavioral care to homeless and abused animals. Volunteers care for and clean up after dogs, cats, and other small animals.
Table to Table | 160 Pehle Avenue, Saddle Brook
Table to Table rescues fresh food that would otherwise go to waste, and delivers it to organizations + families experiencing food insecurity. Volunteers with the organization will use its I-Rescue app to claim flexible food rescue opportunities and transport donations (using their own vehicles).
Tenafly Nature Center | 313 Hudson Avenue, Tenafly
Tenafly Nature Center relies on volunteers to help protect its near-400-acre nature preserve. Available roles often vary (depending on the season, weather, + applicant skills), but there are plenty of opportunities for everyone.
Valley Health System | 4 Valley Health Plaza, Paramus
Volunteers at Valley Health System take on roles made to directly support patients, families, visitors, and team members. Opportunities vary by location and can include assisting at information desks, providing companionship, and participating in specialized programs.
