There’s no feeling in this world that can compare to calling one place home. For some in Bergen County, a home also includes the local businesses that surround the very homes people reside in. CoZie Café, located at 14-25 Plaza Road North in Fair Lawn, has a mission of being a safe and cozy space for all walks of life while also serving up even cozier treats. Behind the Scenes
Cameo Zvanets grew up in Fair Lawn, New Jersey, and decided to open up her own business in the town she loves to call home. “It’s such a special place to me. I get to see my children grow up and play in the same places I did when I was their age,” she told The Bergen County Girl. Cameo owns an inclusive hair salon, The Beauty Loft, and an opportunity arose to expand into the space next door after the pandemic. With the combination of a dream to open up a café and Cameo’s wife, Elana, being unemployed at the time, the idea of CoZie Café was born. “We took our idea of an inclusive café that would feel homey, cozy, and welcoming to all — where we could host town events, put local artists’ art on the walls, and where people would run into friends (or strangers) and strike up a conversation — and we made it happen,” Cameo said.

If CoZie Café can be considered one of the most welcoming and inclusive coffee shops in the area, it also can be said that it provides one of the most extensive menus. Along with the common caramel macchiato or americano, patrons should take a look at its whopping 80 different flavors that include a rotating specials menu, seasonal drinks, and its “frozies.” The business has gone viral for its coffee flights: a choice of four of any of its drinks served hot or iced at once. From popular favorite flavors like Samoas and Butter Beer to more curious drinks like the Barbie latte (a coconut latte with strawberry dragonfruit foam), customers can mix and match drinks to experience the menu in a fun way. Toppings are optional (but highly recommended, of course) and milk substitutions are welcome with a small added fee. Pair a flight with its fresh French pastries delivered straight from Balthazar Bakery in New York City to get the full “CoZie” effect.

Feeling welcome in an establishment is something people take for granted sometimes — especially if one experiences hardships in doing so. “It’s important for us to not only be LGBTQ+ owners of an establishment but people who make a difference. So we hold space for people to feel comfortable being themselves, couples to have a date and not get stares, and friends to meet up at an LGBTQ+ place that’s not a bar or club,” Cameo said. “We have really made sure CoZie Café is not just a café, but a representation of who we are.” Along with a fun menu, the café hosts events like poetry slams and open mic nights for everyone to enjoy and even has games in the back area for customers to use.
