Animals in Distress focuses on rescuing and caring for cats in need. The organization welcomes volunteers to assist with transport, administrative tasks, cat socialization, cleaning, and small handyman projects. Financial donations are also critical and go directly toward veterinary care, food, and daily operations that keep the rescue running.
Animal Welfare Association (AWA) | 509 Centennial Boulevard, Voorhees Township
Animal Welfare Association in South Jersey is the region’s oldest and largest no-kill shelter and low-cost pet clinic. The nonprofit provides veterinary care, behavioral training, outreach, and education programs, and it does not receive government funding. Support can take many forms, including sponsoring a pet, making a one-time or recurring donation, participating in Workplace Giving through payroll deductions, or transferring funds directly from an IRA as a tax-exempt gift.
The Kennel Makeover Project |
The Kennel Makeover Project supports dogs waiting for adoption at Animal Care Centers of NYC by making shelter kennels more comfortable. Donations fund beds, blankets, toys, and enrichment items that help reduce stress during a dog’s stay. Mount Pleasant Animal Shelter | 194 Route 10 West, East Hanover
For over 53 years, Mt. Pleasant Animal Shelter has been caring for homeless cats and dogs, giving each one the chance to find a loving, permanent home. As a no-kill shelter, no animal is ever euthanized due to time or space—they stay in care until their forever home is found. Ways to help include donating money, volunteering, fostering a pet, sponsoring an animal, or donating supplies.

People for Animals has provided low-cost spay + neuter services throughout New Jersey since 1983. In addition to affordable healthcare, the organization focuses on advocacy and community programs. Supporters attend fundraising events, assist with the Pet Food Pantry by coordinating and picking up donations, volunteer in clinic support roles, or contribute creative skills such as photography, videography, or marketing.
Pilots to the Rescue |

Pilots To The Rescue, founded in 2015, combines aviation and animal welfare to transport at-risk animals to safety. Volunteer pilots and ground crews work together to relocate animals from overcrowded or high-risk situations to rescues and adopters. Local transports often welcome additional hands to help coordinate arrivals and ensure smooth transitions, and recent New Jersey flights have demonstrated the powerful impact of these efforts. Founded in 1941, SAVE is an independent 501(c)(3) non-profit dedicated to protecting the health and well-being of homeless pets in the greater Princeton area and beyond. They run six core programs: Rescue, Shelter, Health & Welfare, Spay/Neuter, Foster, and Adoption. SAVE doesn’t receive government funding, so those looking to help can donate or host a fundraiser to support their work.
Spunky Seniors Dog Sanctuary | Northern New Jersey
Spunky Seniors Dog Sanctuary was founded by a Newark Academy student, Eliza. The nonprofit provides loving care to older dogs who are often overlooked in shelters. The organization is also developing a Seniors-for-Seniors style visitation program that would connect calm, small senior dogs with elderly residents for meaningful visits.
