Back-to-school season is quickly approaching, and for many teachers in New Jersey, that means it’s time to put lesson plans together and prepare classrooms for the year. Getting the right amount of supplies can truly get expensive, and for that reason, we have compiled a list of local New Jersey teachers and their wishlists for this upcoming school year. Last year, I came into teaching at the middle school after 3 years teaching for West Orange Public Schools. As a teacher, I still remember what it was like for me sitting in the same seats, acting in the school plays on the same stage, and trading pokemon cards in the cafeteria (which is still common in the cafeteria today). I pull students aside when they need to talk, cook latkes on my griddle to celebrate student traditions, have a song for so many topics to remember, decorate chairs for their birthdays, and dress like Strega Nona and vary my tone when reading stories to being characters to life. There’s a mailbox in my room to communicate feelings or leave beautiful artwork for me. Every child – regardless of background, gender, race, ability, or past – I have the honor of making four walls a special place. When I take the time to connect, instill confidence, respect and appreciate differences, and communicate students’ needs, great things happen. For some, their teachers may be the most significant interaction they have all day. This year there will be about 24 students in my class with very mixed abilities, 7 with IEPs and 1 with extreme behavior challenges so I work very closely with an amazing special education teacher and paraprofessional to give these kids an amazing day. The students range from kindergarten through third grade in academic, social, emotional, and physical needs. I want kids to enjoy coming to school and feel good about where they are going despite their abilities. I always tell them once I am your teacher, I am your teacher for life! The hugs and feelings that are exchanged when former students come to visit is amazing and worth it all. I’m easy going, yet a silly teacher always dressed into something goofy on theme days. There’s no other profession I would ever choose. “I am an English teacher at Oakcrest High School in Mays Landing, NJ. This position changed my life. I have met some of the most incredible students that I was blessed to teach. When you step foot into my classroom, you immediately feel as if you’ve entered the Wizarding World. Floating candles dangle from the ceiling, flying keys protect the Harry Potter Funko Pops, Dumbledore’s wood carved owl podium sits at the front of the room, Hedwig observes lessons from his cage, and Platform 9 and 3/4 is ready for students to board (yes there is a cart)! Students see the portal to the Ministry of Magic (an actual toilet!), can write in Tom Riddles’ Diary, check the Daily Prophet for announcements, and go to the Cabinet of Requirement for materials. My room is designed to make my students feel as if they are escaping reality, as I engulf them into the English course I created entitled “Adventures in Literature”. This course was designed with my #1 novel series in mind, Harry Potter. When I read Harry Potter, I dress the part and change my accent! I wear my robe, carry my wand, and attach my flying snitch to my hand. Students are greeted with a sealed Hogwarts Letter of Acceptance on the first day of the unit and are sorted into their houses by the Sorting Hat. Not only are they engaged in the reading, but the activities as well. Students record sports commentaries for Quidditch matches, create prophecies, we even have a Bertie Botts Every Flavor Bean Day. We also use the Invisibility Cloak (along with the WOW! App) to create videos! I love to teach and change lives each and every day. Teaching has always been my passion and I hope to continue to inspire others for many years to come.”
