The Big Win

According to a press release from the New Jersey Lottery, the ticket was sold at Wegmans Food Market located at 100 Farm View in Montvale. This ticket had to match five of the white balls and the Powerball to win the $847 million jackpot prize. Fortunately for the lottery player, they picked the correct winning numbers, which were 15, 34, 41, 53, and 56. They also managed to match the Powerball number, 21, securing the full jackpot.

While this ticket holder has not yet claimed their cash, they have the option of receiving the $847 million paid out in annual installments over 29 years or getting a lump-sum payment of $363.1 million.

New Jersey winners have one year from the date of the drawing to claim their prize. In the meantime, state lottery officials recommend that the lucky player sign the ticket immediately, make copies, and store it in a safe place prior to claiming their prize.

Another Winner

The jackpot winner isn’t the only one with a huge cash prize coming their way. The Wegmans Food Market in Montvale will also receive a $30,000 bonus for selling the winning ticket. Store manager Nick Tassi announced at a press conference that the grocery store will donate all proceeds to Check Out Hunger, which supports local food banks and hunger-relief efforts across New Jersey.

The market holds an annual fundraiser for its Check Out Hunger Campaign, which began October 21 and will run through November 28.

“I think it’s exciting to put a spotlight on the community of Montvale,” Nick said. “The municipality treats this store like a neighborhood store. I’ve gotten so many calls and text messages from people who live in the area about how excited they are that we sold the winning ticket.”

The $847 million Powerball jackpot now ranks as the ninth-largest in the game’s history, making it another major lottery milestone for New Jersey. The Garden State has seen its fair share of multimillion-dollar winners over the years, including a $429.6 million Powerball jackpot claimed by a Trenton family in May 2016. More recently, a New Jersey player won a $533 million Mega Millions jackpot in 2018, followed by a record-breaking $1.13 billion Mega Millions ticket sold in Neptune in March 2024. That 2024 prize remains the largest lottery jackpot ever won in New Jersey.
