Steeped in Victorian charm and just steps from the sand, the Hotel Albatross has been a staple of Ocean Grove for over a century. Once known for its quirky, no-frills atmosphere, the hotel, located at 34 Ocean Pathway, recently underwent a revival under new ownership and reopened as a sleek boutique hotel. Today, it’s striking a balance between preserving the Victorian charm and character that locals love while offering a more comfortable, curated stay for modern guests with amenities like beach badges, cruiser bikes, and the town’s first elevator. Read on to learn more about the Hotel Albatross in Ocean Grove, New Jersey.
The History of Hotel Albatross
The Hotel Albatross is a four-story building that was originally built in 1881. For decades, it served as seaside lodging for visitors drawn to Ocean Grove’s beach or its tight-knit Methodist community. The hotel eventually fell into decline, and by the late 2010s, its deterioration had become a point of local concern.

In 2023, new ownership began a full-scale restoration led by New York-based interior designer Mapa Mueller. His goal was to modernize the property and add amenities like an elevator, HVAC system, and larger, more functional rooms while preserving its historic character. The renovation was carried out under the watchful eye of Ocean Grove’s historic preservation commission and the Camp Meeting Association, which upholds the town’s strict heritage standards.
Despite challenges, such as Ocean Grove’s prohibition of alcohol sales (yup, it’s a dry town), the revived Hotel Albatross reopened during the summer of 2025 as a boutique destination, blending old-world architecture with contemporary design. The hotel’s iconic balcony and facade even made a brief appearance in HBO’s Boardwalk Empire during the opening of Season 4 in 2013, cementing its place in both local and pop culture history.
Rooms
Set across four floors, Hotel Albatross’ 27 guestrooms (including two suites) are design-driven yet effortlessly relaxed, each one being a gentle nod to the past wrapped in modern comforts. Wood paneling climbs the walls and ceilings in a subtle homage to the boardwalk, while eclectic wallpaper, vintage mirrors from the 1950s, and archival press clippings celebrate the hotel’s storied history.
Rooms come with elevated amenities like Salt & Stone bath products, rainfall showers, guest robes, a writing desk, mini-fridge, and HDTV with streaming platforms. Guests will also find thoughtful extras like an electric kettle with Maiden Coffee pour-over kits, an in-room safe, and A/C that blasts refreshingly after a long day of sunbathing. Some rooms include private decks where guests can have a slow morning sipping coffee or catch the last golden rays of the day with a BYO bottle of wine.
Amenities
Hotel Albatross covers all the essentials for a seamless beach weekend. Each registered guest staying at the hotel between Memorial Day and Labor Day will receive a beach badge with their reservation, eliminating the need to purchase daily wristbands or badges for access to Ocean Grove’s beach. Towels, chairs, and umbrellas are also provided if needed, which comes in clutch for anyone traveling without beach gear.
Guests also have access to complimentary beach cruiser bikes to ride around Ocean Grove and into neighboring towns like Asbury Park, Bradley Beach, or down to Belmar, if they’re feeling adventurous. During her stay, Jess from the JSG team had aspirations of getting up early to bike the boardwalk in the morning, but when the time came, she opted to admire the ocean view in a plush robe and cozy bed.
A daytime golf cart shuttle is also available to pick up guests and their luggage from the train station or nearby parking spots around Ocean Grove. Guests just have to send a text to the hotel concierge to arrange the ride.
