Pelvic Floor Disorder Bladder Disorders

A pelvic floor disorder is the dropping of your bladder, rectum, or uterus due to weakness of the muscles and supporting tissue. In severe cases, tissues may even protrude outside the body.

Similar to hernias, Pelvic floor disorders occur when tissue protrudes through the skin because the underlying tissue is weakened. A person may have more than one pelvic floor disorder at the same time, including:

  • Cystocele
  • Enterocele
  • Rectocele
  • Uterus prolapse
  • Vaginal prolapse

The symptoms of a Pelvic Floor Disorder include feeling heaviness or pressure in the vagina, feeling that the uterus, bladder, or rectum is dropping down, and/or pain during sex.

Urinary incontinence, or “bladder control” issues, refers to leaking urine by accident. This can happen in women as they age, as a result of childbirth, or as a side effect of a health condition or medication. Urogynecologists also treat interstitial cystitis, a chronic inflammation of the bladder that can cause bladder pain and frequent urination.

Symptoms to look out for include leaking or loss of bladder control, feeling the need to urinate frequently, and pain in the lower abdomen or vagina.

When to See a Urogynecologist

Hackensack Meridian Health Urogynecologists treat common gynecologic conditions, such as bladder pain, frequent urge to urinate, vaginal pressure, sense of pressure or pain in the pelvis, inability to empty the bladder, and more.

The doctors at HMH do not have a single treatment plan — each patient receives a custom plan to help them return to a more comfortable active life. Urogynecologists at Hackensack Meridian Health are fellowship-trained in Female Pelvic Medicine and Reproductive Surgery, so patients can feel confident that the team has the experience to create the best treatment.

There are many options for resolving the issues without surgery, such as diet changes, medication or injections, nerve stimulation, implanted devices, and pelvic floor or bladder strengthening exercises.

The Urogynecologists at Hackensack Meridian Health are leaders in the New York/ New Jersey metro area in minimally invasive and robotic surgeries, so if surgery is required, they will recommend the best approach to repair each patient’s pelvic floor or bladder condition.
