Saturday, June 6th is National Trails Day, which is meant to celebrate America’s hiking trails. Several local park authorities have special programming all weekend, designed to get neighbors out and enjoying the hundreds of miles of trails here in Northern Virginia. We’ve rounded up some of our favorite local parks + trails, whether you’re looking for an active hike or just a stroll in nature. Read on for more about National Trails Day in Northern Virginia.
About National Trails Day
The festivities began in 1993, when the American Hiking Society designated the first Saturday in June as National Trails Day, encouraging community members to celebrate local trails, learn more about trail stewardship, and participate in local clean-up and beautification efforts. Now, the event is over 30 years old, and communities all across America have hosted events, education sessions, and more.
This year, many Virginia state parks are hosting events and outings. Fairfax County Parks Authority is hosting several special events, including a ribbon-cutting ceremony for a new park.
