Memorial Day Weekend is almost here, and for anyone planning to travel via Metro, there are a few service updates to know before heading out. WMATA announced its service schedule for the holiday weekend, including free parking, adjusted fares, and track work on parts of the Orange + Silver lines. The updates apply across Saturday, May 23rd through Monday, May 25th. Read on for more about the upcoming schedule changes and how they could impact your Metro ride over Memorial Day Weekend.
What to Know for Memorial Day
According to the latest announcement from WMATA, on Monday, May 25th, Metro Rail will open at 6AM and close at midnight. Metro Bus will run on a Sunday schedule, so riders should plan accordingly. Metro Access riders should also note that subscription trips will be canceled for the holiday, and anyone looking to travel that day will need to make a separate reservation. A little good news for drivers: parking will be free at all Metro-owned parking lots and garages throughout the weekend and on Memorial Day. Weekend fares will apply on Saturday + Sunday, while regular weekday fares will be in effect on Monday.
Track Work Happening This Weekend
Metro will be doing track work on the Orange + Silver lines* on Saturday, May 23rd, and Sunday, May 24th. Trains will single-track between East Falls Church and Ballston while crews complete rail tamping work — a maintenance process that helps keep the gravel beneath the tracks firm, the rails level, and rides smoother for passengers.
Line-by-Line Service Updates
Blue Line: Normal service on Monday. On Saturday + Sunday, service will run normally, though some departure times may shift because of Orange + Silver Line track work.
Orange Line: Trains will run every 18 minutes on Saturday + Sunday and will single-track between East Falls Church and Ballston. Normal service resumes Monday.
Silver Line: Trains will run every 18 minutes between Ashburn and New Carrollton on Saturday + Sunday. There will be no Silver Line service to Downtown Largo during that time. Normal service resumes Monday.
Yellow, Red, + Green Lines: Normal service is expected Saturday through Monday.
Metro recommends riders check service before heading out by using the MetroPulse app, visiting WMATA’s website, signing up for MetroAlerts, or checking WMATA’s social channels for real-time updates. Riders can also call 202-GO-METRO for assistance.
