Many of us love cornhole, that backyard bean-bag tossing game that anyone can play. A new event at the Vienna Volunteer Fire Department will let you put those tossing skills to work in its first-ever VVFD Cornhole Tournament. The event is a fundraiser for the fire department and will take place on Saturday, November 12th, 2025, at the firehouse, located at 400 Center Street S, in Vienna. Read on for more about the tournament and how to get involved.
About the Cornhole Tournament
For the unfamiliar, cornhole is an easygoing, backyard game that is now ubiquitous at breweries, beaches, and family gatherings everywhere. It consists of two players or teams making underhanded tosses of a weighted bean bag into a hole in the cornhole board, which is a 2-ft. x 4-ft board set up at an angle to the ground so it’s slanted. A cornhole set comes with two boards and eight beanbags in two different colors. Each team gets its own color and then switches sides when all four bags have been tossed.

According to the American Cornhole Association (yes, there is such a thing), the winner of the cornhole game is the first team to reach 21 points. Officially, the boards should be set up 27’ apart, between the front edge of each board. TBD on whether the VVFD will play with the ACA rules or its house rules.

About the Vienna Volunteer Fire Department
The Vienna Volunteer Fire Department was founded in 1903 and was the first organization of its kind in the area. The current fire station was built in 1958 and renovated in 2006. VVFD provides emergency services to the community and works in partnership with the Fairfax County Fire + Rescue Department.
The VVFD is an active member of the community, organizing local events that have become staples over the years, including Taste of Vienna and regular bingo nights. One particular event, the Santa Runs, features Santa riding on a 1946 Maxim fire engine throughout the town of Vienna, with the help of the VVFD. The town map is broken down into five sectors, each named after a celebrity reindeer, and Santa visits the community while the fire truck plays holiday music and flashes its lights.
