Bergen County will see the addition of a new grocery chain in the coming years — this one along one of the county’s busiest roads. Plans for a new Costco have been approved for 859 Route 17 South in Paramus. The new spot will expand Costco’s Bergen County footprint to two stores, with the other located in Teterboro. This will mark its 21st location in New Jersey. Read on for what to know so far about Costco’s arrival in Paramus, New Jersey.
Costco’s Arrival in Paramus
Costco’s newest New Jersey store will be located at 859 Route 17 South in Paramus. The plans to build a Costco at the site of a former Stop & Shop were unanimously approved by the Paramus Planning Board on Thursday, October 2nd, per NorthJersey.com.

Paramus Mayor Chris DiPiazza also announced the news of the plans being approved via Facebook on Friday, October 3rd:
“Costco is a premier retailer in the United States, and they are choosing to call Paramus home, They are filling an abandoned property – a vacant lot – and putting in a need. We can’t ask for much more than that. They’re keeping our commercial corridor vibrant, which helps the taxpayers, and they’re doing so with a plan to protect residents that are their neighbors as well,” the post reads.
To build the new Costco, developers will tear down the vacant Stop & Shop as well as a nearby Kmart and strip mall, which are also vacant. Per NJ.com, the Costco approval comes more than a year after Mayor DiPiazza announced Costco’s plans to bid on the vacant lots. As of this writing, the estimated timeline on opening in Paramus is unknown. This post will be updated with any other details as they are announced.
While some Bergen County locals are looking forward to having the grocery giant in an easily accessible region of Paramus, NorthJersey.com reported that others expressed different opinions, citing concerns over the volume of traffic this will bring to the area.
