Image courtesy of Amtrak.&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n<h3>About the Project<\/h3>\n<p>According to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.njtransit.com\/press-releases\/portal-north-bridge-enters-final-phase-construction-work-begins-put-final-track\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">press release<\/a> from NJTransit, &nbsp;Amtrak and NJ TRANSIT will perform critical work to transfer the final track from the 100+ year old <a href=\"https:\/\/www.njtransit.com\/portal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Portal Bridge<\/a> to the new Portal North Bridge over the Hackensack River. The work is set to begin on the evening of October 9th and regular service will resume on November 16th, pending safety testing.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><strong>See more:&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thelocalgirl.com\/newjersey\/new-jersey-film-trails\/\">New Jersey Film Trail Is Officially Coming to the Garden State<\/a><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>The project is part of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gatewayprogram.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Gateway Program<\/a>, a regional transit infrastructure improvement project.&nbsp; And, if the construction on the Portal Bridge sounds familiar, it&#8217;s because there was an <a href=\"https:\/\/jerseyvindicator.org\/2026\/03\/16\/new-portal-north-bridge-brings-nj-transit-trains-onto-a-faster-track\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">earlier shutdown period<\/a> in February + March 2026. This was <a href=\"https:\/\/media.amtrak.com\/2026\/03\/progress-continues-of-portal-north-bridge-cutover\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Phase 1<\/a> of the project, which saw one new rail line activated on the new bridge. Trains will only be able to operate on a single track between Newark and Secaucus, resulting in fewer trains operating into Penn Station New York on weekdays on the Northeast Corridor (NEC) and the North Jersey Coast Line (NJCL).<\/p>\n<p>All Midtown Direct service will be diverted to Hoboken. Midtown Direct customers on Morristown Line, Gladstone Branch and Montclair-Boonton line trains should purchase NJ TRANSIT tickets &amp; passes to\/from Hoboken. Tickets\/passes with an origin station on these 3 rail lines with a Hoboken destination will be accepted for travel on:<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 PATH (at Hoboken &amp; 33rd St. Stations only)&nbsp;<br \/>\n\u2022NY Waterway ferry service (between Hoboken and Midtown only)<br \/>\n\u2022 NJ TRANSIT\u2019s 126 bus service between Hoboken and the PABT<br \/>\n\u2022 Weekend Midtown Direct trains operating to\/from New York<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>This applies to monthly\/weekly passes and FLEXPASS only<\/li>\n<li>One-way tickets will need a NY destination on weekends<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Further, NJTransit plans to support customers by:&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u2022Cross-honoring with NJ TRANSIT Route 126 bus service, New York Waterway Ferry and PATH at Hoboken and 33rd St. Stations<br \/>\n\u2022 Enhanced AM\/PM peak ferry service to\/from Midtown<br \/>\n\u2022 Advance notice of service impacts across every available customer communication channel<br \/>\n\u2022 Real-time service alerts through digital channels<br \/>\n\u2022Station signage and messaging<br \/>\n\u2022 FLEXPASS ticket option on sale (20 trips w\/ 15% discount)<br \/>\n\u2022 Additional NJ TRANSIT Staff in Hoboken &amp; Secaucus<\/p>\n<p>Riders are encouraged to stay tuned to the NJTransit app and website for up-to-date information.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Another workaround is the <a href=\"https:\/\/portalcutover.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Boxcar Bus<\/a>, a private bus commuting company. It will run parallel routes to the disrupted rail lines.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/reroutenj.org\/\">RerouteNJ<\/a> is a web tool developed by NJ Transit rider + Essex County resident Joe Amditis.
