Cash reportedly contributed around $250,000 of his own money, making him a key backer of the project and the first investor. Their meeting sparked a friendship, and Mr. Vaccaro eventually persuaded Cash to become an investor in the hotel project. font-weight: normal; line-height: 17px; text-decoration: none;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DU5-4RwEi0v\/?utm_source=ig_embed&amp;utm_campaign=loading\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">A post shared by Johnny Cash (@johnnycash)<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><script async=\"\" src=\"\/\/www.instagram.com\/embed.js\"><\/script>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cJohnny Cash did more for helping Asbury get redeveloped than Springsteen or Bon Jovi did, they came to town and did stuff but he would actually put his money into <a href=\"https:\/\/thelocalgirl.com\/jerseyshore\/spring-lake-irish-riviera-nj\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">town<\/a> and wanted it known that he was going to live here,\u201d Mr. Vaccaro shared in the documentary, \u201cAfter being inducted in to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on Saturday night at The Waldorf Astoria, he came to Asbury Park to go to church with me the next day at Mount Carmel Church.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cash and June were often seen walking the boardwalk, dining at local restaurants, attending church, antiquing, and engaging with fans.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To honor Cash\u2019s involvement, the hotel created a penthouse suite for him and his wife. The suite became a seasonal home away from home, decorated with personal antiques and mementos, and offered a quiet place for Cash to write, rest, and reflect. Even after the hotel changed ownership, <a href=\"https:\/\/thelocalgirl.com\/jerseyshore\/jersey-shore-bennies-etiquette\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">locals<\/a> continued to refer to the space as the \u201cJohnny Cash Suite\u201d or \u201cthe former Johnny Cash room.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><strong>See more: <a href=\"https:\/\/thelocalgirl.com\/jerseyshore\/mocktails-asbury-park-nj\/\">The Best Mocktails in Asbury Park, New Jersey<\/a><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During the summer of 2020, Albie and Chris Manzo, the sons of Caroline Manzo from <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Real Housewives of New Jersey,<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> partnered with the Berkeley Oceanfront Hotel to reimagine the <a href=\"https:\/\/thelocalgirl.com\/jerseyshore\/inside-the-bruce-springsteen-suite-at-the-asbury-hotel\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">hotel&#8217;s<\/a> dining, event spaces, and the coffee and <a href=\"https:\/\/thelocalgirl.com\/jerseyshore\/coniglios-opening-asbury-park-nj\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">pizza<\/a> shop, rather than purchasing the entire property outright.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a nod to the hotel\u2019s history, the Manzos named one of the first-floor event and entertainment spaces \u201cJohnny &amp; June\u2019s.\u201d The space has been a revolving door of different projects since then and is currently going by the \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/theberkeleybackyard\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Berkeley Backyard<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d, but its corresponding restrooms still have signs on the doors for \u201cJohnny\u201d and \u201cJune\u201d as well as Johnny Cash wallpaper in the hallway.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Bringing Music to the Shore<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cash\u2019s ties to Asbury Park weren\u2019t limited to real estate. In October 1985, he performed two shows at the Paramount Theatre on the boardwalk as a tie-in to the opening of the hotel. The <a href=\"https:\/\/thelocalgirl.com\/jerseyshore\/musicians-jersey-shore-nj\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">shows<\/a> drew a devoted crowd and demonstrated Cash\u2019s commitment to the city beyond his financial stake.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A concert he had at the Paramount theater on July 28, 1990, is immortalized in an album called <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/shop.johnnycashmuseum.com\/Johnny-Cash-The-Great-Lost-Performance-CD.html\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Great Lost Performance<\/span><\/i><\/a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and features classics like <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ring of Fire<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Folsom Prison Blues<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cGood night, Asbury Park, I\u2019ll see you at church tomorrow,\u201d he says during <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/track\/3AZP6KY9ZinUQkxCUZVDr8?si=f14d9f9733a746a5\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I Walk The Line<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at the end of the concert (at the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/track\/3AZP6KY9ZinUQkxCUZVDr8?si=f14d9f9733a746a5\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2:05 mark on Spotify<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 if you want to hear for yourself!)<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Legacy in Music and Imagery<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Though Asbury Park was never a permanent home for the iconic singer, the town offered him creative respite, <a href=\"https:\/\/thelocalgirl.com\/jerseyshore\/sharing-shed-bradley-beach-nj\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">community<\/a> connection, and a space to recharge between tours. Cash\u2019s willingness to invest his own resources and spend personal time there set him apart from other visiting <a href=\"https:\/\/thelocalgirl.com\/jerseyshore\/record-music-stores-jersey-shore-nj\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">music<\/a> icons. His engagement went beyond performance to genuine participation in the town\u2019s revitalization.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In her 1987 autobiography, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From the Heart,<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> June Carter Cash wrote about their Asbury years: \u201cThere is no way to explain how Johnny Cash and June Carter Cash got involved in restoring Asbury Park, New Jersey. When I try to explain it, nothing makes sense.
