When I relocated to Asbury Park in 2022, after growing up in New York and spending part of my 20s in Jersey City, I was convinced friends and family would be as excited as I was to finally be within walking distance of the beach. I soon learned that not everyone was <a href=\"https:\/\/thelocalgirl.com\/news\/beach-badge-prices-2026-jersey-shore\/\">as into the beach as I was<\/a>: the hesitations were so niche that I questioned how I&#8217;d ever get them to go with me. &#8220;I just hate the sand&#8221;, my best friend said. &#8220;Or can&#8217;t we just look at it from here?&#8221;, my sister asked when we stepped onto Asbury Park&#8217;s boardwalk at the beginning of what (I thought) would be the perfect beach day.<\/p>\n<p>It got me thinking of all the ways I could combat their complaints. Beach haters will also get a beach experience with its island eats and a tropical <a href=\"https:\/\/thelocalgirl.com\/jerseyshore\/dive-bars-jersey-shore-nj\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">drink<\/a> menu.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><a href=\"https:\/\/riverrockbricknj.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">River Rock Restaurant + Marina Bar<\/a> | 1600 NJ-70, Brick Township<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">River Rock is a restaurant and bar in Brick. It\u2019s in my guide because of its outdoor <a href=\"https:\/\/thelocalgirl.com\/food-drink\/best-new-jersey-restaurants-2026\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">dining<\/a> experience <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">it has a Tiki Bar with tiki umbrellas and imported sand that transports you to the beach without going. Beach haters and lovers also get a river view and a cute backdrop for a picture.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>The Beach Hater Who Still Wants a Tan<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There&#8217;s something special about a beach tan <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">it&#8217;s basically a rite of passage for a proper <a href=\"https:\/\/thelocalgirl.com\/jerseyshore\/prep-jersey-shore-summer\/\">Jersey Shore summer<\/a>. Even as a beach devotee, I can admit that I&#8217;ve never felt more awkward than when I&#8217;m walking with my beach chair backpack (IYKYK, the convenience is worth it). To be honest, who doesn&#8217;t appreciate a casino on a boardwalk with beach access? Hard Rock&#8217;s Beach is an exclusive summer experience with lounge chairs, cocktails, cabanas, and beach games \u2014 all the makings for an upscale beach day. <strong>FYI<\/strong>: Hard Rock Beach accommodations are available to the public, meaning you don\u2019t have to be a hotel guest to enjoy.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><a href=\"https:\/\/www.icona.com\/avalon\/amenities\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ICONA Avalon<\/a> | 7849 Dune Drive, Avalon<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ICONA is a luxury hotel in Avalon. I recommend East Coast Tiki Tours, which runs through Forked River. Two things the beachphobe will appreciate: Misters (because we know that Jersey summer heat can get intense) and BYOB policy (no explanation necessary), which are both unavailable on the beach. It&#8217;s known as a legendary spot on the Jersey Shore. It has an exclusive lure as it is only accessible via water, so you&#8217;ll need a boat, jet ski, wave runner, or kayak to join the party. If you&#8217;re lucky enough to get a spot, imagine loads of people dancing, BBQing, and hanging out on floats. The River Queen is a public cruise based in Brielle, and has a sightseeing cruise for those who just want to take in the <a href=\"https:\/\/thelocalgirl.com\/jerseyshore\/best-ocean-view-resturants-jersey-shore\/\">views<\/a> of the waterways connecting Brielle, Manasquan, and Point Pleasant. It also has meal cruises &#8211; you can pick from dinner, lunch, or my favorite, brunch. Even more fun? There&#8217;s even a murder mystery cruise that sounds like a good reason to ditch the beach for the day.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>The &#8216;I Want The View, Not the Sand&#8217; Beach Hater, Or The &#8216;I Get Bored&#8217; Beach Hater<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is the beachphobe who wants a solid ocean view but can&#8217;t stand the sand. To be honest, even as a beach lover, sometimes I just need a break from the messiness and want to take in the shore&#8217;s beauty without the residue haunting every piece of clothing I own. These alternative activities will be your beach hater&#8217;s new obsession because they all have stellar ocean views that can be appreciated from afar. There\u2019s no way to be bored when you and your beach hater climb the 199 steps up the original cast iron spiral stairway to the top of the 1859 lighthouse. I also like the Sky Ride, which takes you above Seaside Heights beach and gives you a fun view of the Atlantic Ocean, Barnegat Bay, Seaside Heights, boardwalk stands, and businesses.
