What We Know

The building of the future home of Tillie’s Palace corners Press Plaza, which is the center of Cookman Avenue, a six-block-long street considered the downtown of Asbury Park. Dotted by restaurants, bars, and local stores, the emptiness of the two-story building since its last tenant moved out over a decade ago has been felt by residents and visitors alike. Once a key piece of Asbury Park’s bustling downtown, the future arrival of Tillie’s Palace will be a key part of uniting Cookman Avenue, restoring Press Plaza to its original glory.

Drawing upon the nostalgia of the history of Asbury Park, Tillie was chosen as the official face of the new restaurant. Tillie is the nickname of a grinning figure painted on the side of the Palace Amusements building in Asbury Park. Palace Amusements was an indoor amusement park in Asbury Park that operated from 1888 to 1988 featuring a hand-carved carousel, a steam-powered Ferris wheel, a hall of mirrors called The Crystal Maze, and a fun house.

The new restaurant promises to pay homage to the spirit of The Palace while providing a modern twist on the menu. While the menu has yet to be released, it is hoped that it will complement what is already provided on Cookman Avenue. Perhaps, if residents and visitors are lucky, a few classic boardwalk treats such as funnel cakes or deep-fried Oreos will make it onto the menu.

According to its website and Instagram page, there is no date set for the restaurant’s opening just yet, but with the significant progress being made it is hopeful that it will be fully operational in time for the 2025 summer season.
