From buses and trains to rideshare services, there are numerous ways to navigate the Jersey Shore without a car. Whether commuting to work, running errands, or heading to the beach, getting around our seaside towns can be simple and convenient. Public transit and rideshare options provide affordable and accessible solutions for moving through the area. Read on to learn more about transit options at the Jersey Shore.
Public Transit at the Jersey Shore
Navigating the Jersey Shore is convenient thanks to NJ Transit, which offers a comprehensive network of trains, buses, and local transit options. The NJ Transit train system provides direct service along the North Jersey Coast Line, connecting major shore towns like Long Branch, Asbury Park, and Point Pleasant Beach to New York City and other parts of New Jersey. Additionally, NJ Transit buses run throughout the Shore area, offering convenient routes for getting around local communities and reaching destinations like shopping centers, beaches, and popular local spots. With affordable fares and reliable service, NJ Transit is an excellent choice for both residents and visitors who need to get around the Jersey Shore car-free.

NJ Transit Train Service
The North Jersey Coast Line (NJCL) rail line runs from Rahway to Bay Head, passing through shore towns like Long Branch, Asbury Park, Belmar, and Point Pleasant Beach. Trains on this line operate frequently, with express and local services available. During peak summer weekends, express trains from New York Penn Station to shore destinations are offered. North Jersey Coast Line schedules can be found online or on the NJ Transit mobile app.
For those heading to, or navigating, the Atlantic City area, the Atlantic City Rail Line connects Philadelphia's 30th Street Station to Atlantic City, with a transfer to NJ TRANSIT Bus Route 552 for service to Wildwood and Cape May.
NJ Transit train tickets can be purchased on the NJ Transit mobile app, at ticket offices or vending machines at available stations, or from the conductor on board the train. A $5 surcharge is applied to tickets purchased aboard trains if a ticket agent or ticket vending machine is available at the time and location of boarding.
NJ Transit Bus Service
NJ Transit buses are a convenient way to travel around the Jersey Shore, offering routes that connect popular beach towns and cities. Riders can use the “Service Near You” option to find the closest bus stops to their location. A “Point-to-Point” bus guide can also be found on NJ Transit’s website. The website will assist in planning a trip itinerary using the NJ Transit bus system after providing an origin location, destination, plus dates and times.
Ocean County bus stations include Brick Township, Dorado, Lakewood Terminal, and Toms River. Monmouth County bus stations are located at Aldrich Road, Craig Road, Freehold Center, Freehold Mall, Gordons Corner, Howell, Lloyd Road, Marlboro, Schibanoff, Symmes Drive, Texas Road, and Union Hill. The Atlantic County bus station is in Atlantic City. Cape May County bus stations include Cape May, Ocean City, and Wildwood.
NJ Transit bus tickets can be purchased on the NJ TRANSIT Mobile app and at some NJ TRANSIT bus terminals and bus garages. More bus ticket information can be found on the NJ Transit website.

Ride-Sharing + Taxis
Ridesharing services such as Uber and Lyft are a convenient way to get around the Jersey Shore, offering door-to-door flexibility for traveling between beach towns, restaurants, and nightlife spots. They’re especially useful for short trips or when public transportation schedules don’t line up with your plans. However, keep in mind that demand can spike during peak hours, leading to higher fares, particularly on weekends or during special events. Uber and Lyft provide convenient options for short trips or areas not directly served by public transit.
Local taxi services at the Jersey Shore provide a dependable way to get around, particularly for those who prefer not to use ridesharing apps. Numerous taxi companies serve the area, offering transportation to and from beach towns, restaurants, and local attractions. Although taxis may not be as flexible as ridesharing services, they offer a more traditional option, with availability through phone bookings or street hails. However, during peak tourist seasons, finding a taxi during busy hours can be challenging, and fares may rise due to higher demand.
