Riders can purchase single trips, day passes, or memberships and can find and unlock bikes using the Capital Bikeshare mobile app or station kiosks. The system <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wp-dyn\/content\/article\/2010\/09\/20\/AR2010092003815.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">opened in 2010 <\/a>with 50 stations. The expansion also brought 45 electric bikes + 134 classic bikes to the county&#8217;s fleet, giving residents more options for getting around without a car. With the latest additions, Fairfax County now has 126 Capital Bikeshare stations, including locations at all 13 Metrorail stations within the county.<\/p>\n<h3>Setting Records<\/h3>\n<p>According to an announcement from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fairfaxcounty.gov\/transportation\/news\/T29_26\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Fairfax County Department of Transportation<\/a>, Capital Bikeshare recorded 6,560 trips in August 2026, setting a new all-time monthly ridership record for the county. September wasn&#8217;t far behind, with 5,770 trips recorded.
