There are over 250 items on display, plus interactive elements to the exhibit and fun life-size displays that make you part of the show. Courtesy of Illusion Projects.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>Getting Barbie to Richmond&nbsp;<\/h3>\n<p><em>The Fairfax Girl<\/em> chatted with<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Elizabeth Klaczynski, the VHMVC&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vmfa.museum\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">associate curator of exhibitions<\/a>, about how Barbie&#x2122; came to Richmond. We started talking about this exhibition years ago,\u201d Elizabeth said. \u201cWe just thought it\u2019s a great exhibition. It\u2019s fun, it\u2019s bright, it\u2019s colorful.\u201d Beyond the photo opportunities + familiar faces, the museum saw a chance to connect with visitors through something many already knew and loved. \u201cWe really wanted to bring it here because so many people have a connection with Barbie,\u201d Elizabeth said. \u201cShe\u2019s sort of like a universal figure in American pop culture. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I think it really taps into a sense of nostalgia and brings people back to their childhood and different memories. These Barbies&#x2122; were already part of Mattel&#8217;s archive, so the VMHC team paired each Barbie with an item from its collection to demonstrate the real-life connection. For example, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.katherinejohnsonfoundation.org\/biography\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NASA mathematician Katherine Johnso<\/a>n has her own Barbie, and the museum has one of her original calculators on display next to the doll.&nbsp; There&#8217;s also a Barbie who represents the only President to be represented by a doll &#8211; you&#8217;ll know it when you see it.&nbsp;<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>About the Exhibit&nbsp;<\/h3>\n<p>The exhibit is part history lesson, part interactive display, and all beautifully organized. And the fun begins before you even make it to the gallery: a life-sized hot pink Barbie&#x2122; Corvette is in the museum lobby, and it&#8217;s set up for visitors to explore and sit in.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The exhibit itself begins with Barbie&#8217;s original design made by Ruth Handler, who named Barbie&#x2122; after her daughter (and Ken after her son). Barbie&#8217;s official birthday is March 9, 1959, and the exhibit shows all of her incredible career moves and the spectacular wardrobe to go with it along the way. The exhibit includes many original items, including several from Mattel, to show how the dolls are made.&nbsp; Another fun interactive moment is the life-sized Barbie Dreamhouse. It is open every day, Saturday &#8211; Tuesday 10AM &#8211; 5PM and Wednesday &#8211; Friday 10AM &#8211; 9PM.
