She remembers watching local broadcasters like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/danhellie\/?hl=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dan Hellie<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/wjla.com\/sports\/sports-talk\/tim-brant-says-goodbye-to-long-time-viewers-and-his-abc7-family-114356\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tim Brant<\/a>, attending basketball games at the former MCI Center, and going to Georgetown basketball games at McDonough Arena while wearing a Georgetown Starter jacket.<\/p>\n<p>There were also dinners at sports-related D.C. destinations, trips to ESPN Zone, and plenty of opportunities to participate in sports herself. She remembers reading features on All-Met athletes in the local Gazette newspaper and wanting to eventually become part of the media ecosystem telling stories about athletes from the region. \u201cI knew I wanted to be part of the DMV sports media cycle telling the stories of hometown athletes,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>After college, Kelsey expected to enter local sports news immediately after graduating and believed her career could eventually take her elsewhere in the country. What she did not anticipate was becoming a freelance journalist so early in her career, or building a personal brand so strongly connected to the DMV. \u201cI always knew I would work in sports media but didn\u2019t think I would make a career in freelancing and working as a freelance journalist so early on in my career,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><em>See more:&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thelocalgirl.com\/fairfax\/away-team-nfl-watch-nova\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Home-Away-From-Home Spots for NFL Fans in Northern Virginia<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Instead, being able to establish herself in her hometown became one of the most meaningful parts of her professional journey. Kelsey is a graduate of both the University of Maryland and Georgetown University and now teaches at George Washington University, giving her connections to several of the region\u2019s major colleges and universities.<\/p>\n<h3>Is D.C. a Sports Town?<\/h3>\n<p>Cities like Boston, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, and New York tend to dominate conversations about major American sports cities, but Kelsey believes the DMV belongs in that discussion, too. \u201cD.C. has a rich history and culture of sports,\u201d she said. She describes Washington first and foremost as a football town, particularly one still connected to the championship history of the burgundy and gold.<\/p>\n<p>Kelsey has seen that connection firsthand. She worked with the Washington Football Team, now the Washington Commanders, on its digital and broadcast team during the 2020 season.<\/p>\n<p>But football is only part of the story. \u201cThere\u2019s not a day in the city where I don\u2019t interact with sports fans in some way,\u201d she said. That constant engagement with local fans eventually helped inspire her to launch the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/pulse\/welcome-edition-1-week-playful-banter-kelsey-nicole-nelson-40joc\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <em>Playful Banter<\/em> LinkedIn newsletter<\/a>. It also contributed to her launching the first \u201cIntro to Sports Writing and Reporting\u201d course at George Washington University\u2019s School of Media and Public Affairs. But it is a sports city \u2014 don\u2019t let the politics overshadow the sports storylines,\u201d she said. The region has produced elite athletes across generations and continues to have a strong sports culture at the youth, college, and professional levels.<\/p>\n<p>When it comes to local professional teams, Kelsey believes the Washington Mystics deserve more attention from DMV sports fans. But what stands out to her is not only what the team is doing on the court. She highlighted the Mystics\u2019 community initiatives, including<a href=\"https:\/\/mystics.wnba.com\/equipher\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> EquipHer<\/a>, a program that provided Mystics-branded sports bras to female student-athletes in D.C. public middle and high schools. \u201cThe Mystics are getting it done on and off the court,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<h3>Why the DMV Still Matters<\/h3>\n<p>Kelsey\u2019s career may continue expanding across sports media, education, and entrepreneurship, but she does not see her connection to the DMV disappearing. In fact, it has become part of her professional identity. She sees the region not simply as the place where she grew up, but as a sports market filled with history, talent, passionate fans, and stories still waiting to be told. For someone who once thought her career might require leaving the area, being able to build it at home has become one of the most meaningful parts of the journey.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s no place like the DMV,\u201d she said.
