This shiny copper one-cent piece was first made in the US in 1792, and the last one rolled off the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.usmint.gov\/news\/media-kit\/penny?srsltid=AfmBOoqRhE8IbGzuZA9IQdp_jS7ekmm_E0gD9d9MtsCFxebcCCsN43-a\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">assembly line in 2025<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. With this recent decision, pennies aren\u2019t as easy to find as they used to be for people who need them. As a result, some new payment changes are coming to remedy the issue, and one just landed in Fairfax County. <\/span><b>Read on to learn more about this payment change and how it will work.&nbsp;<\/b><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-233447\" src=\"https:\/\/thelocalgirl.com\/fairfax\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2026\/08\/pennies-fairfax-county.png\" alt=\"no pennies fairfax county\" width=\"450\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thelocalgirl.com\/fairfax\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2026\/08\/pennies-fairfax-county.png 1000w, https:\/\/thelocalgirl.com\/fairfax\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2026\/08\/pennies-fairfax-county-800x533.png 800w, https:\/\/thelocalgirl.com\/fairfax\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2026\/08\/pennies-fairfax-county-768x511.png 768w, https:\/\/thelocalgirl.com\/fairfax\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2026\/08\/pennies-fairfax-county-585x390.png 585w, https:\/\/thelocalgirl.com\/fairfax\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2026\/08\/pennies-fairfax-county-263x175.png 263w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/><\/p>\n<h3><b>No More Pennies?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The end of an era: <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">November 12, 2025 marked the last day that the United States Mint<a href=\"https:\/\/www.usmint.gov\/news\/media-kit\/penny\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> made new pennies<\/a>.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The Secretary of the Treasury <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">decided<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> this <a href=\"https:\/\/home.treasury.gov\/news\/featured-stories\/penny-production-cessation-faqs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">based on the increase<\/a> in cost of penny production from $1.42 to $3.69 per penny. Now, the United States Mint only creates pennies that are made for collection, known as \u201cnumismatic\u201d purposes, rather than for use and general circulation.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As good as it is to save all the extra cash, we\u2019re now in the aftermath of such a change.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A direct result of pennies being cut off, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">it\u2019s now difficult for anyone to have any in their businesses, and in government settings as well<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. People are not able to get pennies as easily as they once were, and since basically forever, they\u2019ve been essential for giving someone back their exact change.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><strong>See more:&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thelocalgirl.com\/fairfax\/ms-annies-waxing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Catching up with Ms. Annie of Ms. Annie\u2019s Waxing<\/a><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Other <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kjzz.org\/politics\/2026-03-16\/as-u-s-phases-out-pennies-arizona-enacts-measure-to-begin-rounding-all-cash-transactions\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">states<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.signalsaz.com\/articles\/penny-discontinuation-cash-rounding-changes-in-phoenix\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">and localities<\/a> are figuring out how to respond to the change<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The National Conference of State Legislatures issued <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncsl.org\/state-legislatures-news\/details\/with-demise-of-the-penny-states-prepare-for-change\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">guidance in late 2025<\/a> preparing states for the change. Now, it&#8217;s coming to Northern Virginia. The Virginia General Assembly has also allowed for counties to create some kind of response<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fairfaxcounty.gov\/boardofsupervisors\/sites\/boardofsupervisors\/files\/Assets\/meeting-materials\/2026\/July14-Board-Package-Final.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Fairfax County Board of Supervisors<\/a> decided on a path forward in July.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>The Decision<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cToday in Fairfax County, we\u2019re making a change\u2026 actually we\u2019re kind of not making change anymore,\u201d Fairfax County Board Supervisor Walter Alcorn joked in the opening of a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/SupervisorWalterAlcorn\/videos\/fairfax-county-ditches-the-penny-due-to-the-nationwide-penny-shortage-the-board-\/27410587858611252\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">video<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> posted on Facebook on July 15th. \u201cBecause there are no more pennies being produced in this country, we have adopted a policy that we will no longer provide change in penny form whenever using cash with the county.\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That\u2019s right; because of this new lack of pennies, they\u2019ll no longer be used, at least until July 1, 2027.&nbsp; <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe\u2019re going to round up or round down to the nearest nickel,\u201d Supervisor Alcorn said. This type of &#8216;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kjzz.org\/politics\/2026-03-16\/as-u-s-phases-out-pennies-arizona-enacts-measure-to-begin-rounding-all-cash-transactions\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Swedish Rounding<\/a>&#8216; has been used in other situations where communities are eliminating the penny. This method rounds&nbsp;cash purchases down to the nearest nickel for totals ending in 1, 2, 6 or 7; rounding up to the nearest nickel for those ending in 3, 4, 8 or 9.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><strong>Read more:&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thelocalgirl.com\/fairfax\/tradeworx-workshop-fairfax-va\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">We Took a Power Tools Class in Fairfax + Now We Feel Unstoppable<\/a><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Businesses in Fairfax County, and the County itself, will have to apply this new system. County departments taking cash payments will have to, no surprise, fill out paperwork to keep track of it all.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whether this change lasts until July 1st of 2027, or will end sooner\u2026 one thing\u2019s for sure: our favorite little bronze coins are no longer as we once knew.
