The <a href=\"https:\/\/metro50th.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Metro exhibit<\/a> will show the Metro as it was in 1976, including a refurbished Series 1000 rail car, which was the original rail car on Metro.&nbsp; <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wmata.com\/news\/america-s-metro-system-to-celebrate-50-years-of-service-with-exh.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">According to organizers<\/a>, \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Metro\u2019s five decades of service to the National Capital Region will be highlighted in the exhibition through historic photographs and artifacts, interactive displays, educational activities, multimedia experiences, and explorations of the future of transportation and mobility. The orange carpet is a far cry from the clean and modern 8000-series cars we&#8217;re used to today. The two cars, original and current, were displayed side-by-side so visitors could get the full effect.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>About the Metro<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\nThe idea for an urban railway system in Washington first came about in 1946, when <a href=\"https:\/\/dcmetrodev.weebly.com\/history.html?\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">several engineers proposed<\/a> a system for DC that would be similar to the rail systems in Boston and Philadelphia.&nbsp; In 1960,&nbsp; Congress passed a law creating the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dcpolicycenter.org\/publications\/regional-transit-proposals-history\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">National Capital Transportation Agency<\/a> (NCTA) to shepherd the project through. Several different proposals were shared, and in 1968, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wmata.com\/zh-hans\/about\/all-about-metro\/timeline.html#1965\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">plan was approved<\/a> that became the blueprint for the Metro.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><em>Read more:&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thelocalgirl.com\/fairfax\/farmers-markets-northern-virginia-spring-2026\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Your Guide to Northern Virginia Farmer\u2019s Markets<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The DC area metro opened <a href=\"https:\/\/ggwash.org\/view\/71470\/happy-birthday-metro-watch-metros-evolution-since-1976\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">50 years ago in 1976<\/a> with one line &#8211; the <a href=\"https:\/\/ggwash.org\/view\/67044\/happy-birthday-metro-watch-metros-evolution-since-1976-in-this-slideshow\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Red Line<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It served five stops before adding more Red Line stops, and in 1977, the Blue Line opened, followed by Orange in 1978. The Yellow Line came along in 1983, and in 1991, the Green Line opened.
