Art from neighborhood children sits next to pieces sent<a href=\"https:\/\/thelocalgirl.com\/fairfax\/herndon-mosaic-artist\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> from professional artists<\/a> throughout the world, in a variety of media such as painting, collages, drawings, and fiber art. The two things that all the artworks have in common are the size and price: everything is&nbsp; 5\u201dx7\u201d or smaller, and it\u2019s all free. <em>The Fairfax Girl<\/em> chatted with Stacey Schwartz, curator of a FLAG in Arlington, to learn more about the gallery system. <strong>Read on for more about the Little Free Art Gallery concept and how you can participate &#8211; or partake &#8211; in the art.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-229357\" src=\"https:\/\/thelocalgirl.com\/fairfax\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2026\/01\/littlefreeartgallery_FI.png\" alt=\"little free art gallery FI\" width=\"450\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thelocalgirl.com\/fairfax\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2026\/01\/littlefreeartgallery_FI.png 1000w, https:\/\/thelocalgirl.com\/fairfax\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2026\/01\/littlefreeartgallery_FI-800x533.png 800w, https:\/\/thelocalgirl.com\/fairfax\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2026\/01\/littlefreeartgallery_FI-768x511.png 768w, https:\/\/thelocalgirl.com\/fairfax\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2026\/01\/littlefreeartgallery_FI-585x390.png 585w, https:\/\/thelocalgirl.com\/fairfax\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2026\/01\/littlefreeartgallery_FI-263x175.png 263w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>About the Free Little Art Gallery<\/h3>\n<p>Arlington resident Stacey Schwartz learned about the Free Little Art Gallery (FLAG) concept as part of her studies when she earned a master\u2019s degree in Arts Management from George Mason University. \u201cI noticed they were growing in popularity,\u201d she said. \u201cThey were popping up everywhere, especially during and after Covid.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Seattle-based artist Stacy Milrany is credited with setting up <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.milrany.com\/the-longer-story\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the first FLAG<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in December 2020. She writes,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI believe that more art should be more accessible to more people\u2013 paintings, poems, song, and dance\u2013\u2013these personal expressions of our \u201chuman-ness\u201d and I hope this little gallery might contribute to that little dream.\u201d <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There\u2019s no official tracker or governing organization of the FLAGs, but <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/freelittleartgalleries.art\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the informal network <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of curators and supporters is robust and international. At her 2023 graduation, her husband gave her the actual FLAG that she curates today, which is called the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/freelittleartgallery_arlington\/?hl=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dominion Hills FLAG<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stacey had a background in digital strategy and social media, having worked at WETA, Arlington County with Arlington Arts, and at George Mason University &#8211; College of Visual and Performing Arts. The master\u2019s degree in Arts Management was the next step in her work of organizing people and sharing information about art. \u201cI realized that for me, curation was the art,\u201d Stacey said. It feels a bit like a dollhouse, as the space is decorated to look like a gallery, with \u2018wooden\u2019 floors, lighting, and even mini-easels for the artwork.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stacey said that when she first put up the FLAG, she was afraid it was going to be \u201can empty box.\u201d&nbsp; But, within a few weeks, community members had already bought into the concept. \u201cI noticed that visitors were interacting with the gallery more like owners, in that they were rearranging things, decorating the gallery, really engaging with it,\u201d she said.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-229360\" src=\"https:\/\/thelocalgirl.com\/fairfax\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2026\/01\/flag2.png\" alt=\"inside the little free art gallery\" width=\"450\" height=\"450\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thelocalgirl.com\/fairfax\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2026\/01\/flag2.png 1080w, https:\/\/thelocalgirl.com\/fairfax\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2026\/01\/flag2-800x800.png 800w, https:\/\/thelocalgirl.com\/fairfax\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2026\/01\/flag2-1024x1024.png 1024w, https:\/\/thelocalgirl.com\/fairfax\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2026\/01\/flag2-200x200.png 200w, https:\/\/thelocalgirl.com\/fairfax\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2026\/01\/flag2-768x768.png 768w, https:\/\/thelocalgirl.com\/fairfax\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2026\/01\/flag2-585x585.png 585w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p>At first, Stacey said that stocking the gallery was really up to her, drumming up connections with local artists. Now, in addition to contributions from local artists and neighbors, she receives artwork from all over the country and the world. \u201cI have so much art,\u201d she said. \u201cI check the gallery a couple of times a day to make sure there\u2019s enough in there, and make sure things are tidy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stacey\u2019s FLAG also has a geocache in it, meaning that geocachers also get exposed to the FLAG. \u201cIt\u2019s been a great way to draw new visitors,\u201d she said. &#8220;People are so surprised to pull up and see that the geocache is in this tiny art gallery.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>FLAG and the Community&nbsp;<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stacey says that the give-and-take nature of the collection and the fact that all skill levels and nearly all types of media are welcome mean that the gallery is accessible to the community in ways that art typically isn\u2019t. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In her view, the possibilities for the gallery as a tool for the community are endless. \u201cBecause the art is created by community members and then shared with other community members, it gives people a space to feel like they can contribute,\u201d Stacey said. She has worked with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/arlingtoncollagecollective\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Arlington Collage Collective<\/a> to create art, and looks forward to seeing where things with the gallery can go. \u201cI\u2019m excited about the future,\u201d Stacey said. \u201cThere are so many things I can do with the gallery in terms of sharing art made by community members. Stacey says that the neighbors are supportive, thanking her and expressing joy at the daily surprise of seeing new art. \u201cThere\u2019s a strong camaraderie among the local curators,\u201d Stacey said. \u201cWe\u2019re really active on social media, and it\u2019s a great resource. The generosity of the community and the artists is overwhelming,\u201d she said. \u201cI get to look at and interact with all of this beautiful art every day,\u201d she says. \u201cIt\u2019s amazing.\u201d <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhenever I see a little kid out there, it brings me so much joy because it means that they\u2019re opening the gallery and feeling comfortable putting their art in that space,\u201d Stacey said. \u201cIt\u2019s a huge goal of mine because I hope that that means that down the road they\u2019re ready to interact with the arts in whatever way that is.\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-229359\" src=\"https:\/\/thelocalgirl.com\/fairfax\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2026\/01\/flag_3.png\" alt=\"stacey schwartz -
