At Meanwhile&#8230;Coffee, Jessica + Tim&#8217;s Herndon shop, coffee is their vehicle for creating a gathering space for coffee drinkers, crafters, gamers, and anyone looking for a really great cup of joe. While dating, their go-to activity was visiting coffee shops with friends, drawing, talking, and soaking in the atmosphere. \u201cEvery coffee shop is different,\u201d Jessica says. \u201cThe vibe, the aesthetic, the menu. Tim got a teaching job, and Jessica took a long-term substitute teacher position while she studied up on coffee, how to run a small business, and scouting out spaces. Naming the shop was unexpectedly hard, but when they landed on <a href=\"https:\/\/meanwhilecoffeeshop.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Meanwhile&#8230; Coffee<\/a>, everything clicked.<\/p>\n<p>Tim, who does graphic design and is a lifelong comic book fan, designed the logo to mimic the classic \u201cMeanwhile\u2026\u201d panels seen in comics. Jessica, who loves superhero stories, especially female and minority heroes, immediately saw the potential. \u201cI have no background in comic books,\u201d she says, \u201cbut I loved the logo. Jessica worked with Counter Culture Coffee to source beans, equipment, and training for the baristas. She found local partners to provide sweet and savory menu items to round out the cafe\u2019s offerings.<\/p>\n<h2>What to Expect<\/h2>\n<p>Jessica and Tim\u2019s vision to create a coffee shop that serves as the backdrop for community is clear from the moment patrons enter the space. There is just about any type of seating arrangement one could want, including a large table for groups and a low coffee table for games. Muffins, one of the shop\u2019s biggest hits, are supplied by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chunkersbakery.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Chunker\u2019s Bakery<\/a>, a locally owned business known for unique, sourdough-based flavors like cherry dark chocolate.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><em>See more:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/thelocalgirl.com\/fairfax\/fairfax-countys-independent-bookstores\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Fairfax County\u2019s Independent Bookstores<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>For savory options, Jessica was determined from day one to serve empanadas.
